Many know that November 12, 2025 was when the longest government shutdown in history ended since it started on October 1, 2025 after 43 days, but not that many people know how the government shutdown ended and why?
A government shutdown usually starts when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills to fund the government before September 30, and to end a government shutdown Congress would need to a pass legislation, this means that both the House and Senate would need to approve a spending bill, after both the House and Senate approves the spending bill the current president would need to sign the bill which then the government can be lifted from its current shutdown, this is shown that even if both the House and the Senate approves of the spending bill they would still need the president to sign it to lift the shutdown.
If the president does not sign the bill then it goes back to Congress for a possible override with a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate, but if the President takes no action within 10 days while Congress is in session, the bill becomes law automatically. When a government shutdown ends the federal employees get approximately 70 percent of their owned pay within 24 to 48 hours.
