KSJC Homecoming 11/03/2023
In Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie finds a newfound comfort when watching his new friends Sam and Patrick dance away to “Come On Eileen," in Spider-Man: Homecoming Peter Parker finds what it truly means to be Spider-Man, and at KIPP San Jose Collegiate, students are met with an empty dance floor, a corner filled with awkward glances, and the Billboard Top 20. Why is it that Peter Parker and Charlie Kelmeckis can have riveting and exciting homecomings, while ours are so underwhelming?
I may sound a bit like my mom, but movies aren’t life. When holding expectations for something and seeing it fall through, we are immediately disappointed and hold the new low bar for future reference. When asked about homecoming and if they are going, most students say no because it will be just like last year: cold, awkward, and lame. The constant belief that homecoming will be lame manifests itself into reality and unintentionally creates a lame homecoming, driving people away. Although we created this problem, there is a simple (sort of) way to fix it: go with an open mind and take it all in with some hoco hope.
“We’re living in a bit of a fantasy world where we’re pretending that COVID is not relevant. There is a lot of COVID out there and we’re not testing for it and we’re not telling people to get tested,” stated by the Whitehouse coronavirus response coordinator, Deborah Birx. Over 500 million people or more were affected by the virus COVID-19, with kids having to be taught in online classes, and lockdown having us in place for almost two years. Only recently on May 2, 2023 has COVID been officially declared over by the World Health Organization, giving us the freedom to finally be able to calmly leave our homes and not have to wear masks every time we decide to go out. This news brought a lot of happiness, and for some it finally put us at ease, not having to worry about the deaths it had brought upon us, as it’s finally over. But recently, numerous pieces of data have been pointing to the possibility that there is a high chance that COVID-19 could be making a comeback.
November 1 just recently marked the date that the mask mandate was officially issued on plenty of healthcare workers. According to Los Angeles Times, a state data has been provided stating that “There has been a recent spike in COVID-19 cases in California and across the U.S., California’s coronavirus test positivity rate was 12.8% as of Sept. 10, compared to 5.1% two months ago," There is no doubt that COVID-19 cases are continuing to spread rapidly throughout the month; reportedly, congestion, sore throat, and dry cough are only three of the many prominent symptoms of covid right now. Another issue that has been circulating was the introduction of the two new variants of COVID-19: HV.1 and EG.5. These variants are mutations that can allow the virus to be immune to recent vaccines or could possibly increase its growth rate. Unfortunately, scientists found more variants that are said to be carrying an alarming mutation.
Whether COVID-19 possibly comes back or not, one thing that is guaranteed is that people should be more careful and aware of the symptoms that their body is experiencing and should take precaution immediately, whether it’s covid or not. We should always be careful. So be mindful, try to stay healthy, and stay away from crowded places to prevent the slightest chance of contracting these new variants, as it’s not only symptoms that come along with it, but also possible death which is more than possible with its alarming rate of growth.

KSJC Latest Music Obsessions!
Written by: Charlotte Zeng 10thThis week’s most popular music genre among KSJC sophomores is… R&B! Taking up around 36% of the data we’ve acquired from surveys and interviews. Brent Faiyaz seems to be a fan favorite artist, with about 20% of the answers on the surveys. Some song recommendations from KSJC students are:
Still Not a Player - Big pun
DHL - Frank Ocean
Indonesian Fantasies - Sonder
Ditto - Newjeans
After Hours - Avenoir
Drop Dead - Starfall
Ghetto Angels - NoCap
Duvet - Bôa
For the first time - Mac Demarco
Freaking Out On The Interstate - Briston Maroney
Lastly, this month’s new music genre introduction is Bossa Nova! Bossa Nova is a genre similar to American jazz with a traditional Brazilian rhythm. The aesthetic of this genre is very beachy with a calm, catchy tune. A trendy Bossa Nova song to listen to is “The Girl From Ipanema” by Stan Gets.

A lot of time, people want to acquire a better diet. But how do we do that exactly? In order to eat healthy, you don't have to completely change the way you eat. You can first start off by incorporating healthier snacks, such as fruits or vegetables. For example, you can eat apples, celery, or bananas with peanut butter. You can also have Greek yogurt and add in granola, dried fruits, and honey. Another option is to eat granola bars.
Next, you can also find substitutions for snacks you already eat! A great substitute for buttery popcorn is skinny pop, and for kettle corn is boom chicka pop. I know we all like hot chips; however, red 40 is a harmful dye in these products. A healthier alternative can be baked Hot Cheetos or chili and lime flavored rolled tortilla chips from Trader Joes. Lastly, a great alternative to fruit snacks are Mott's fruit gummies.
Lastly, you can start drinking lower-sugar options for your drinks. You can always buy low-sugar Gatorade to replace the large sugar intake with a regular one. Next, you can drink diet options of the sodas you prefer or drink brands like Poppi or Olipop, which have great substitutes. Then, to make water a more appealing beverage, you can add things like lemon slices, mint leaves, or cucumbers.
There are many healthier options for popular snacks. Putting in the effort to gradually make a change is what makes or breaks your diet.
Do you have the biggest crush on someone right now? Can't figure out how to get closer to them? Here are tips on how to get closer to your hallway/school crush!
Get on their radar
One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to trying to get someone to fall for you is that you think you are not “good-looking” enough for them. This mostly isn't the case, although it may seem that looks are mostly why people might like you. A poll from people in our school shows that a ratio of 7:3 people prefer their significant other to have a good personality and emotional connection rather than great looks and no connection. Therefore, my first tip is that you should focus on building a relationship with that person. Whether it may be asking for a pencil or having a full-blown conversation about their day, make sure they know of you!
Find out what they like
ASK ABOUT THEM!!! Everyone likes talking about themselves, no matter how humble they say they are. When you ask questions about other people, they feel seen and admired. You can also use their answers to your advantage by remembering facts about them and bringing them up later.
Them: “Wow they remembered my birthday 😳”
By doing this you can also find out similarities and differences between you two. Make sure they know your similarities.
Them: “My favorite sport is basketball!”
You: “omg me too!”(harmless white lies areokay).
This will make them think that you guys are the perfect pair 🥰
Get a new look!!
I know I said looks aren't everything, but looking the part will most definitely get things rolling. Buy some new outfits, wash your face, but most importantly, look different! Get out of your comfort zone. People tend to notice you more once you make a sudden change in appearance. By getting a new haircut or not wearing the same black KIPP hoodie every day, you are bound to get some attention.
With these tips, I'm almost sure your crush will be thinking about you all the time.
