If you didn’t know, on Sunday, 5/12, the Aurora Borealis was visible in the United States.
Specifically here in San Jose, you could’ve seen it from 10pm to 3am from certain areas. The Aurora Borealis is in a lot of people’s (including me) bucket list, which just shows how special this event really was for many people in San Jose.
So, why was this even possible in the first place? Usually, the Aurora Borealis is only visible in Antarctica, so what caused it to be visible all around the world? To understand that, it’s important to understand what the Aurora Borealis is in the first place. The way the Northern Lights are created is through energized particles from the sun crashing into the Earth’s atmosphere at such a high speed (specifically 45 million miles per hour!).
Now, this may sound super dangerous to Earth just from hearing it, but, us on Earth are perfectly fine throughout this event. We have Earth’s magnetic field to thank for protecting us from these particles. The magnetic field redirects the particles to Earth’s North and South poles, causing the phenomenon we know as the Aurora Borealis. The Sun’s particles are ejected from its corona, which creates Solar Winds, that are, in a sense, the Aurora Borealis.
So, how were we able to see it from places like the United States? They should only be able to be visible from the North and South pole according to the given information. Well, there is actually another factor that plays into the Aurora Borealis, called “coronal mass ejection”. This phenomenon occurs when the particles that were ejected from the Sun’s corona create a geomagnetic storm. This happens since there is a major disturbance in Earth’s magnetosphere due to there being a very efficient exchange of energy from the solar wind into the space around Earth. These solar winds must be happening at very high speeds, in a southward direction to the solar wind’s magnetic field.
Once all this is met, the coronal mass ejection “supercharges” the Aurora Borealis, making the whole event be more visible from farther south. This is why we could see it from the US!

Sony’s 100th Anniversary: Caught in a Web
Written by: Cesar Vilchis 11th
For the past few weeks Cinemark had been re-releasing all live action cinematic Spider-Man movies in theaters, this event is given the name Spider-Mondays due to the screenings being one film every Monday.
They have re-screened the Sam Raimi Trilogy, starring Toby Maguire as the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Spider-Man (2002) made a total of $681k on April 15 2024, the lowest income from the trilogy, which is surprising due to it being the first time the webslinger is on the big screen. Spider-Man 2 (2004), by film enthusiasts, marked to be the best out of all three of the films, making $809k on its re-release on April 22nd. Spider-Man 3 (2007) making a total of $760k on April 29th which is stunning to see since the film was rather disliked when it first hit theaters in 2007, this being the first adaptation of the main symbiote of Venom in theaters, seeing this film aged well is enjoyable to witness. This re-released trilogy by Sam Raimi made a total of approximately $2.25 million dollars.
Unfortunately a film that did not age that well in the box office is The Amazing Spider-Man. The duology directed by Mark Webb (known for making 500 Days of Summer), TASM stars Andrew Garfield as The Amazing Spider-Man. These films once again missed the mark on its re-release as it did on its debut. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) made $510k on the 6th of June, while I have a rather biased opinion due to this movie being one of the best film adaptations of Peter Parker and Spider-Man for me, it is understandable that it gained what it did. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) produced $500k on the 13th of June, this income being rather lackluster which is understandable for a rather lackluster Spider-Man film. This duology by Mark Webb made a mere $1.1 million dollars on its re-release, $1.15 million less than Sam Raimi’s trilogy.
These films being re-released on a Monday out of all days of the week seems like a rather not so smart move, due to it leading to less profit. While it isn't about profit for us, it's more of the experience. If you want to experience Tom Holland's Trilogy in theaters again on well visit Cinemark on May 20th, they are showing Spider-Man Homecoming (2017), on May 27th Spider-Man Far From Home (2019), and on June 3rd Spider-Man No Way Home (2021). If you want to experience all web heads in theaters sharing the big screen, best to swing by your local Cinemark and buy a ticket to Spider-Man No Way Home on June 3rd.
New Neighbor: Some Aliens!
Written by: Cecilia Delgadillo 11th
Ever since it was discovered that Earth was not the only planet in this solar system, the question is, are aliens real? On July 21st 1969, the United States of America had won the space race and gone to the Moon. Several drones and space probes have landed on planets such as Mercury or Mars. Although some of these events are seen as unreal and conspiracy theories, it adds to the mystery of aliens and life on another planet.
Aliens and extraterrestrial life have been a trope in film, tv and media for years with movies such as E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Star Wars or in songs like ‘Starman’ by David Bowie. They are seen as green, slimy and skinny big headed creatures out to harm humans. This can be seen all the way back to 1809 in Washington Irving’s “A History of New York”. In film series like Star Wars they are seen with their own communities and societies living with other planets. Media has always dictated the point of view and perspectives of people for hundreds of years, but what if they were wrong?
What if instead the aliens were us? What if they lived with us in harmony? What if aliens aren’t “little green men” but your best friend, your mom or even yourself? Obviously to other planets, we are aliens and we pose the same role aliens do to us on Earth but the aliens can also be living among us. The aliens are living harmoniously with us and nobody knows so why should we be scared of them if they could be our neighbors. Instead of provoking them with making them seem scary, we should start accepting them and welcoming them with open arms because soon they could be our new neighbors.
Urban exploring
Written by: John Doe ??th
You may have heard of urbexing, well what is urbexing? Urbexing (short for Urban exploring) is the exploration of abandoned buildings and exotic places. Usually it involves getting into buildings through unconventional methods. There are many associated risks with urbexing, however there are also some rewards, one being uncovering the past of abandoned buildings. Urbexing can range anywhere from exploring an abandoned factory, abandoned railroad, to climbing a cell tower. There are many associated dangers with this, however, such as the possible chance of getting attacked by a squatter, getting arrested, breathing in toxic chemicals, etc. Some famous examples of some places include the catacombs in paris, or abandoned soviet era airbases. By no means is this article encouraging you to do this, however if you do be safe and have fun.

AI: The Bad, The Ugly, and The Worst
Written by: Eliana RamirezGuzman 10th
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is slowly becoming a dilemma. While it's hailed for its potential to bring convenience to our daily lives, enhance efficiency, and revolutionize industries, AI also raises concerns over its negative impact. Between making inequality worse to threatening privacy and autonomy, the darker implications of AI in various fields of modern life are prompting a critical examination of Artificial Intelligence.
The main concern with AI is its impact on employment. As AI continues to evolve, it’s increasingly being used to do tasks that humans would traditionally perform. This could cause millions of workers to become unemployed in particular jobs that rely heavily on repetitive and routine tasks. While AI can create new job opportunities for certain fields, the impact could widen the gap between skilled and unskilled workers.
Who knows? Maybe this article was AI made?
Brenchwarmer? Here's Advice From a Fellow Bench Player
Written by: Geremy Barahona 10th
As a fellow bench player, I understand how frustrating it can be to sit on the sidelines while your teammates are out there playing. However, there are some things you can do to improve your chances of getting off the bench and onto the field.
First and foremost, practice hard and show your coach that you are dedicated to improving your skills. Make sure you are always ready to go and willing to put in the effort to get better.
And don’t forget to be a good teammate. Encourage and support your teammates during games and practices. Showing that you are a positive presence on the team can go a long way in earning the respect and trust of your coach.
Thirdly, don't be afraid to ask your coach for feedback. Ask them what you can do to improve and what areas you need to work on. Showing a willingness to learn and take constructive criticism can demonstrate that you are serious about playing and improving.
It's also important to stay positive and motivated. Being a benchwarmer can be discouraging at times, but it's important to keep a positive attitude and stay motivated to improve. Keep reminding yourself of your goals and stay focused on what you can do to reach them.
Additionally, it's important to take advantage of any opportunities that come your way. If you do get a chance to play, make the most of it and show your coach what you can do. Even if it's just a few minutes of playing time, use it as an opportunity to showcase your skills and make a positive impact on the game.
Also, remember that being a benchwarmer doesn't define you as a player or a person. Keep working hard, stay dedicated, and keep a positive attitude, and you will eventually get the chance to show what you can do on the field.
Remember, getting off the bench takes time and effort, but if you stay dedicated and focused, you can make it happen.
How to have an academic comeback before school ends
Written by: Rhiane Kate B. Dalisay 09th
There are only 15 days, 2 more Mondays up until school ends and finals are coming up and there is only so much you can do to improve your grade or maintain it as it is now. This leads many people to wonder “How can I bring my grade up?”, “How can I prepare for my upcoming test?”, SBAC’s, AP, and CIA cumulative tests test you on all the things you have learned through your school year. It can either cause your grade to go up or go down, this test allows you to prove to your teachers all the things you have learned and all the things you have improved on. This is why it’s important to prepare for and go all over your weaknesses and strengths in a specific subject to truly be prepared for the test for every topic that would be present in the test.
The first step to having an academic comeback is to Ditch the Negative Self-talk, Don’t think that you can’t do something, and have a higher goal for yourself If you plan to have a passing grade hope for an A have a higher expectation as it would allow you to try harder to reach this goal and could potentially trick you to work harder and try harder in tests. The second step is to be organized and review topics you don’t understand being organized would allow you to have the motivation to look over your work and it allowed you to have a clean slate to work on, reviewing topics would help you understand things you don’t know and things you know and with that, you might have a clear understanding on the things you should focus on more than other topics that you don’t need to review on, as for reviews you can go to can search up videos to understand a specific topic, take notes on it.
The third step is to Focus on your classes finals are coming up and your classes might seem to get harder as teachers are starting to wrap up the units and are reviewing for things that would be in your finals so focusing for the last 3 weeks is essential as it could also decide if you will have to retake your classes as second semester is already ending. The fourth Step and the most important of them all is to ask for help If you don’t understand something ask your teacher for help to have a better understanding of the material, and don’t wait for the final minute to ask for questions, good students ask questions and it will be greatly beneficial for you. Finally, the last step is self-care take care of yourself your body, and your mind, to perform better in tests you can’t be stressed as it will greatly affect your performance, have a positive view of your score, and start your test with an open mind, Self-care to is eating before your test it would allow your mind to work better with all the nutrients, and third spend time with people you enjoy being with your family and friends they would help you feel better and relieve your stress on things you have on your mind.
