The KSJC Girls Varsity Volleyball Team recently had their rivalry match against Kipp Navigate for the Apex Champion Belt, a game that many were excited and waiting for. In this hyped-up game against one of the top teams in our league, our girls played a near-perfect match against Kipp Navigate. Prior to the day of the game, Coach Winters confidently said, “I always root for our fellow Kipp schools, unless we are playing them.” Showing that Coach Winters and the team were more than ready to take down Kipp Navigate. The biggest factor that was playing into the intensity of this game was both teams needing to win this game in order to get 2nd place in our league.
To start off the 1st set, we had an ACE from #12 Lesley Luong and started to build steam off that first play. Later in the same set, #18 Hannah Guerrero and Lesley were getting back-to-back ACES and spikes, causing Navigate to take a timeout. After the timeout, the team had 4 ACES and 2 spikes to end the first set giving it to KSJC. To start off the second set, #17 Siennah Monterrosa hits an ACE to once again build steam for our team. Then, KSJC served many ACEs by #3 An Nguyen and Hannah causing a snowball to win KSJC the 2nd set.
Continuing to the 3rd set, we didn’t start off as strong and the set was a lot closer compared to the other two. To really bring the energy to the team in this set, Hannah hits 4 ACEs in a row! This was followed by a spike by #4 Miranda Elizondo and a crazy dive by #1 Kayla Le. Nearing the end of the set, An and Hannah both had multiple spikes to themselves, with Miranda and #19 Diana Soto getting more points on the board for KSJC. With KSJC at 24 points, #15 Ashley Rosales hits an amazing spike for KSJC’s 25th point and the win!
KSJC took home the Apex Championship Belt and the win, pushing them to 2nd in the league. Postgame, Coach Winters told us, “This was our 4th win in a row, so that means we’ve been making improvements game after game and we’re trying to win the league.” We then got to talk to Coach Christianson who said, “I feel like they did a good job staying cool-headed under pressure, I feel like we could play more aggressively but they did a good job under pressure.”
What is “School Spirit”?
This is a question that many people have wondered about and have multiple different answers. In the words of Wikipedia, “School spirit is the sense of identity and community shared by members of an educational institution.”. A unanimous agreement on school spirit is showing pride in your school and its many endeavors by dressing up and showing out.
Another question that has plagued the minds of students and staff is: “How to have School Spirit?”
1. Have Confidence
There's nothing that says school spirit more than spirit week. Throughout the years, ASG has organized spirit weeks with themes to keep the school year festive and fun. Although some themes may not come off as great and exciting as they were intended to, that should not interfere with school spirit. Be confident and dress up! Confidence is key when it comes to school spirit. Although you may think that it looks stupid or silly, dressing up shows you have pride in yourself and your school. Nobody wants to be that one guy…
Another way to show off your school spirit is by cheering on our teams! (Even if the gym is quieter than a library.) During games, our teams need encouragement and hype from the bleachers and nothing shows school spirit more than cheering on our team and school! A perfect example of this was the Girls’ Volleyball game vs. Navigate! Our school filled up 2 whole sets of bleachers and the surrounding floor! The crowd was amazingly loud and everybody had the confidence to root for the team! Not only that but the display of school spirit left Navigate in shambles.
2. Be proud of your school win or lose
Like all high school movies (High School Musical, Bottoms, Friday Night Lights, Bring it On, She's the Man, etc.) sports are the foundation of all school spirit. Whether the game was an intense match resulting in our school with yet another win under their belt or an “easy” match that resulted in a loss to be a winning school it requires 2 things: the team and its fans. Supporting our teams is a simple way of showing school spirit, and by amping them up, it motivates them which may be the secret ingredient to a win (sports skills as well, of course.)
3. Encourage others to dress up with you
Circling back to the topic of spirit week, another way to show spirit is to increase participation by telling others to dress up with you! Fun ways to do this include planning out group outfits with your friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc., and giving your ideas for spirit days to ASG, teachers, and staff. Creating a collaborative, fun environment makes it easier to be able to feel more spirited about school. By creating new themes and encouraging others to dress up with you, when people see KSJC they won’t think of a small, skunk-ridden parking lot but a small, skunk-ridden parking lot with lots of spirit!

The middle of the fall season brings good things for the community of KSJC. As students and staff return to class after the much-needed Fall Break, a number of teachers and student-led clubs continue to plan and coordinate a number of events centered around the community and culture of the school (and those who inhabit it).
On Friday, October 13th, the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica will be hosting a celebration of Hispanic culture, food, and music from 5 pm to 8 pm. The event, known as Pachanga, is open to all ages and backgrounds - attendance is encouraged regardless of ethnicity. Food will be served from 5 to 7, and from 6 to 8 there will be a live performance by Alta Conquista. “It's a place to enjoy Latino culture with friends and family,” says Fernanda Morales, the president of Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, “so make sure to come out and enjoy the event!”.
Pachanga is just one of the many objectives that the SHH aims to complete this year, and is financed almost entirely by fundraising within school premises. In fact, fundraising is the primary method that student clubs in KSJC use to pay for future endeavors. For example, KSJC WolfPrints will be selling pizza every Friday after school and will be selling hot chocolate, pumpkin spice lattes, and donuts this Friday during Pachanga. While engaging in cultural celebrations during Pachanga, attendees can also support future issues of the school newspaper.
Coming from an insider in ASG, the Spirit week for 10/30 - 11/3 will be:
Mon - PJ Day/Stuffed Animal Day!
Tues - Dress up for Halloween!
Wed - Rhyme Without Reason!
Thur - Wear Fall/Halloween Colors!
Fri - (Day of Dance) Dress up as a Tim Burton Character or Dark Colors!
There will also be games held thought the week, and ending it off the week with a Fall Dance!
In the coming December, the KSJC Dems Club will be advocating for the passage of two ordinances—local laws—that will prevent RVs from being parked near KSJC as well as providing unhoused individuals living in these RVs greater resources. While substantial in itself, it opens opportunities for greater changes to be made to KSJC, such as improved classrooms, better lunches, and even our own gym.
To recap, the KSJC Dems Club is a student-led group founded to promote the concerns of students to a political level. The group encourages collaboration and courage when speaking out on the many issues KSJC faces which are not limited to Safety & security, Space Limitations, and the Quality of School Resources.
Since returning from online learning, students have witnessed encroachment by unhoused individuals. Reportedly, there have been incidents where unhoused individuals have trespassed onto campus during school hours and further into school facilities—classrooms, restrooms, and storage areas—leaving reason to believe in a lack of security along with an unsafe learning environment. Alfredo Hernandez Jr, the founder of the KSJC Dems Club, recognized the lack of any indication to whether KSJC’s situation would improve and created a platform in which students would be able to voice their concerns and spread awareness of our school’s situation to a larger audience.
On another note, the KSJC Dems Club has also been working with the San Jose Police Department in order to implement precautionary measures against break-ins and other similar events.
“I am incredibly proud of my classmates for speaking on these issues when it mattered most and having the courage to uplift others in doing so,” said Alfredo Hernandez Jr.
And with an entire school year ahead of us, be expected to see more tangible developments emerge
While you can attend most of our sporting events such as Volleyball during this Fall’s winter sports, you almost never get news about our Cross Country Team, which has so far been dominating at their division meets and moving up the power division! At the time of the writing of this paper, the Team has already participated in 5 meets, 2 of which have been division races. Our Varsity Boys ranked 2nd and girls ranked 3rd at PSAL #1, all out of 9 schools! The most recent division meet at the Crystal Springs Preview last Thursday ranked our boys and girls 3rd! Our most recent invitational at Artichoke brought home 6 medals! It’s about time that they are more recognized for the work they put in every day and what they have accomplished thus far. So here is a quick insight into the considerably reserved Cross Country Team.
We’ve interviewed the majority of the team over the course of the past week to give you an insight as to what goes on in the team and maybe, you may even consider being part of this community! We asked our members these prompts:
How does it feel to be the fastest runner?
Sebastian: “It’s so lonely, there’s no competition. Text me @sebasg995”
What is your favorite part of the Cross Country Community?
Wulrik: “My favorite part is watching other people run and get tired because they have dedication for this sport.”
Finally, we asked our coach: What is your favorite part of coaching the team?
Ms. Kuga: “I just like seeing y’all outside of the classroom. So while I love teaching English, I know school isn't for everybody… so when y’all decide to come out here and compete in a sport where we get to hang out in a more informal setting, that’s my favorite part. I also just really love seeing y’all setting goals for themselves and actually working hard to improve… One of the best parts of my day is coaching Cross Country.”
“I have been having a crush on this girl in my ethnic studies.”
“This kid in my spanish is actually massively stinky 😭”
“I almost got arrested”
“One time during lunch, I farted and luckily it was silent but it was so stinky and for a bit no one said anything and I thought I got away with it but then my friend said really loud “Um guys who farted ” and of course, everyone burst out laughing. so I did as well, and so I thought, this is where I get caught. BUT it seemed like I was super lucky that day because there was a stink bug that landed on our table and one of my friends said “Oh it must’ve been the stink bug.” I didn’t even know what a stink bug was but to this day I am so happy it was there!”
”Drowning 🥶”
“I'm scared to talk to girls”
“My Biggest fear is failing school, I feel like I have a responsibility to finish school.”
“My biggest fear is being paralyzed, becoming a vegetable. and people keeping me alive while I just wanna die but I can’t say anything 💁♀️💁♀️”
“Being stuck in an office job for sixty years until I die”
“I regret leaving the school”
“Not asking her out”
