How to Get a Summer Job
Written by: Eliana RamirezGuzman 10th
Ah, summer, that wonderful time of the year when the Earth becomes literal Hell, where your skin becomes as toasted as a piece of bread after being in the toaster too long, and your ice cream turns into a sticky puddle of regret in your hands. It’s also the best time of the year for a job, not having to balance between AP exams and worrying about your failing grades. But how exactly do you get a summer job, you might ask?
1. Check Yourself
First, you need to get an idea of your skill set: maybe you're pretty good at putting on make-up or you’ve got a great eye for fashion. You need to consider jobs that fit your criteria and that you’d actually enjoy doing, rather than being stuck at a boring desk job all summer despite getting to bask in that sweet air conditioning. You also need to consider how much you're actually willing to work every week otherwise you’ll just end up overworking yourself instead.
2. Drafting Time
You’ll need to start drafting your resume next and I already know what you're thinking: do I really have to write a resume? Yes, because unless you want to stay broke and stuck at home all summer, you're going to need a resume. You want your resume to highlight your skill set like I mentioned earlier from being able to properly communicate to being able to multitask. If you have no previous work experience, that’s alright, you can always mention volunteer work you’ve done outside of school or any other relevant topics. Writing a cover letter is also a great way to explain how your skills would be a perfect fit for the position you're trying to get. Preparing references is also an option so that your future employers get an idea of what you do work wise.
3. Job Hunting
This has personally started to become my favorite part of this whole process because it requires you to actually do some research. Looking through the career sections of companies you're interested in working for is a great way to start as many online websites will already have that listed at the very bottom. Not sure if these are still a thing but job fairs are also a great way to find companies who are looking to hire, or asking family if they know of any new openings.
4. Application Tracking
Applying for different jobs at the same time is a great idea as it saves you lots of time that would have been wasted on each individual application getting checked. Make sure to have your resume, cover letter, and references on hand as you fill out each application because every application you fill out will definitely be asking you for that. Making sure that you keep track of every job you apply for is a must or you’ll be scrambling to remember what you applied for.
5. Interview Preparation
Uh oh, here comes an introvert's worst nightmare: having to talk to a person. Preparing for an interview isn’t that hard, but be prepared to answer lots of questions. Common interview questions always circle back to your strengths, weaknesses, and past experiences which should be easy enough if you answer honestly. Knowing basic information about the position you're actually applying for also goes a long way as it shows how committed you are to getting the job, just make sure to come to your interview looking the best and most professional you can be.
6. Congratulations! (Not)
Waiting to hear back about whether you’ve got the job or not is always so nerve wracking, been there done that, but it’s not so bad once they’ve reached out to you. Whether you’d been rejected from the job you had been hoping to have been hired for or were actually hired, at least you actually tried at something that many people would be too lazy to even attempt.

KSJC Prom 2024
Written by: Elijah Vazquez 11th
On May 18, 2024, KSJC had their 2024 prom! The prom theme this year was “A Night Under the Lanterns”, a really great theme for a prom. Arriving at prom at Hayes Mansion, which was surprisingly very elegant and outstanding, you could already tell that it was going to be a fun night. With many different people wearing clothes you never really see them in, it was definitely going to be an experience. While students were there, many teachers also decided to show up at the prom! At around 7:00 pm, students began to trickle into the actual mansion, where the prom was being held. Students ate for around 30 minutes until the DJ started to play more popular songs that got the students up on the floor. There were many very good songs being played, with very few misses. Most of the songs played were bay area hip-hop and very famous hispanic music. I would say my personal biggest gripe about prom was that it did feel like it took a bit long for prom to actually feel like it started to become a party. I would say that besides that small issue, prom was definitely a very fun night for a lot of people. Prom ended at around 11:00 pm, with many heading out to end the night.
KSJC’s Euro Summer
Written by: Cecilia Delgadillo 11th
Is ‘Notting Hill’ summer your goal? Or maybe an ‘Amelie’, ‘Marie Antoinette’ summer? Or maybe you would much rather a ‘The Commitments’-esque summer? Well if so then the upcoming international trip hosted by KIPP San Jose Collegiate is just for you! Taking place in the summer of 2025 KSJC will be going to Paris, London and Ireland.
The trip's first stop is going to be London, England. London is renowned for its punk scene, tea and for its city and nature escapes. London has been the home of many English pop culture memories. Movies like Harry Potter, Padington albums like London Calling or even ‘London Boy’ by Taylor Swift are huge milestones and significant markers of England’s capital. These pop culture milestones are not the only sights of London though, there are many landmarks as well. Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park and the Big Ben are some of London’s tourist attractions and notable features that I am sure will be included on the trip.
The next stop on KSJC’s summer extravaganza is Ireland! Ireland has also had its huge moments in pop culture and history it giving us amazing celebrities like Sinead O’Connor, Paul Mescal and Ayo Edebiri. The Cliffs of Moher and Blarney Castle and Stone are some of its most notable landmarks and are true historical artifacts displaying Ireland’s history. It is much more lowkey than the bustling city of London with its acres and acres of long stretches of grass and plains but that does not mean that it doesn't have a huge entertainment scene known for being very ‘craic’ (Their words not mine.)
And last but definitely not least, the final stop of KSJC’s adventure is Paris, France or the ‘City of Love’. If the landmarks of London or Ireland did not sound as familiar to you, I will bet you 100 euros that the landmarks of Paris will. The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe and the Notre Dame Cathedral are some of the remarkable attractions of not only France but also of the whole world. The Louvre (not the Lorde song) holds hundreds or art pieces ranging from paintings such as the Mona Lisa and sculptures such as Venus de Milo. These attractions certify an educational and entertaining experience.
So we’ve discussed the major points and the trip sounds intriguing to you… but what are the next steps? Ms. Fregoso and other teachers will be hosting a meeting with more information and details about the trip on Wednesday, May 29th. During this meeting, details surrounding the trip, payment activities and discounts will be shared. Horrible Truth Behind an Internet Phenomenon
Written by: Cesar Vilchis 11th
We are all probably familiar with the viral phenomenon of the blue and black or the white and gold dress that became a worldwide controversy during 2015. Unfortunately, recently the man behind the controversial image has been convicted for attempting to murder his wife.
The couple were a media sensation in 2015. The mystery of the dress was so massive that they were invited to The Ellen Show back in March 20th 2015. They even got huge celebrities on X (formerly known as Twitter) expressing their views on the dress, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and various other large celebrities getting in on the controversy letting their audience know what color they see.
This tragedy barely came to light. Scottish husband Keir Johnston (age 38) was convicted in regards to the abuse and assault of his wife Grace Johnston on March 6 2022. This means he was out without any repercussions for two years before his conviction. Grace Johnston was nearly murdered through inflicted strangulation by Keir.
In court, Mr. Johnston pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Grace Johnston on May 9, 2024, he will be sentenced on Thursday, June 6th.
This news broke the internet just like the viral image, except of people perplexed on a color, they are perplexed over the intentions of Keir for the attempted murder. The reason behind his actions was due to an isolation of Grace during the relationship. Grace Johnston was isolated from loved ones by Keir, in court she explained that there was an 11-year long altercation of abuse, domestic violence and coercive control inflicted on her from Keir. This build up led to an argument between the two of a divorce which ended with Keir lashing out on Grace with violence and allegedly wielding a knife, all this before pinning her to the ground. shortly getting pulled off by a neighbor, he rushed into his house, soon returning saying he will “finish” her “off”. Grace managed to call the police after the altercation.

“Drought: a period of time when an area or region experiences below-normal precipitation… can cause reduced soil moisture or groundwater, diminished stream flow, crop damage, and a general water shortage” This a natural disaster not only California had to endure for many years but also the whole US, The damage crops due to the dry period and lack of precipitation causes a huge impact on our agricultural land which has a huge impact both our economy and environment. Droughts not only affect our economy but it also have an effect on our health as droughts commonly increase the risk of wildfires and dust storms that can very likely cause respiratory problems such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
According to the U.S Drought Monitor, “less than 1% of California-Nevada remains in drought, compared to 100% a year ago”, This means that no part of California has been under drought ever since September of 2023, which shows an improvement in both rainfall and snowpack levels. Another factor that played a part in California’s being almost drought-free is that over the years there has been an increase in water conservation meaning that the practice of using water efficiently to reduce unnecessary use of water is being addressed. Third, better water management such as treating, storing, and capturing water for different purposes such as for agriculture, industry, and domestic use. It also takes into account balancing the amount of water each stakeholder gets to ensure having fair and equal water resources for everyone. Most importantly, over the years policies and regulations have been made aiming to promote efficient water usage, as water is a very valuable resource, we use it for our everyday life, therefore it should be used smartly and only using it if it’s needed further save as much as we can for other valuable priorities such as growing food, cooking, human survival, industrial process, etc.
The 55-gallon target, dictated by the Assembly Bill 1668 and Senate Bill 606, targets to “Establish water use objectives and long-term standards for efficient water use that apply to urban retail water suppliers; comprised of indoor residential water use, outdoor residential water use, commercial, industrial and institutional (CII) irrigation with dedicated meters, water loss, and other unique local uses.” Thus, establishing water usage more efficiently, ensuring that no water is wasted and that it’s used for important purposes in our everyday lives, would benefit everyone.
Mbappe Out! Now where will he go next?
Written by: Geremy Barahona 9th
It has been confirmed for quite some time now that Kylian Mbappe will be leaving the Paris Saint-Germains (PSG) at the end of his contract. The 22-year-old French forward has been a key player for PSG since joining the club in 2017, but recent reports suggest that he is leaving PSG.
Mbappe's contract with PSG is set to expire in 2024, and there have been no indications that he is close to signing a new deal with the club. This has led to speculation about where he might go next, with several top clubs across Europe expressing interest in signing the talented young striker.
One of the most widely rumored destinations for Mbappe is Real Madrid. The Spanish giants have had a long-standing interest in the French forward and have reportedly been monitoring his situation at PSG closely. With Real Madrid looking to strengthen their squad, Mbappe could be a perfect fit for the club as they look to reclaim their dominance in both domestic and European competitions.
Another potential destination for Mbappe is Liverpool. The English club has been linked with the French forward in the past and could make a move for him if he becomes available. With their high-intensity style of play and attacking prowess, Mbappe could thrive at Liverpool and help them maintain their status as one of the top teams in the Premier League and the Champions League.
Other top clubs such as Manchester City, Barcelona, and Juventus have also been mentioned as potential suitors for Mbappe, highlighting the level of interest in the young star.
While PSG will lose Mbappe at the club, the lure of playing for a historically successful team like Real Madrid or joining a high-energy squad like Liverpool could prove too tempting for the talented forward to resist.
As the speculation continues to swirl, only time will tell where Mbappe's future lies.
