Israël-Palestine Conflict
Written by: Ixchel Ibanez Guerrero 10th
The Israël-Palestine conflict started on October 7th of 2023 when an attack led by Hamas hit Israel and its Supernova festival. This led to Israel’s response of multiple airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. This was not the first time Israel and Palestine had been at war. In the 20th century, there was also war around the 1940s and the 1960s. On November 29, 1947 the United Nations General Assembly had put the Palestine's resolution into place. This meant that Palestine would break into 2 states–one state being a place to house the large number of Jewish immigrants after WW2. However, it would set off a conflict between Jews and Palestine Arabs. The 1948 Arab-Israeli war lasted from May 15, 1948 to Mar 10, 1949. Only after Israel had declared independence on May 14, just a day before the war broke out. Then in 2007, Hamas had taken over the Gaza Strip after Israel’s withdrawal in 2005. However in this current war, Israel has cut power to Gaza which has been home to approximately 2 million people and home to refugee camps. The current death toll of both sides combined is around more than 5,000. Now in the United States there have been protests in Brooklyn, New York regarding both sides of the conflict.

With the winter season coming up, we’re going to start seeing Christmas lights on the streets, Christmas events starting up, sweaters being put on, but most importantly, winter sports are here! At KSJC, we have our basketball, soccer and cheer leading programs, which are all very prestigious for how good they are! In our 2022-2023 year, our basketball program went 11-3, not losing a single game at home and making it to CCS. It is expected that for this season, they are aiming to be even better than last year, with Coach Sway, Coach Winters and Coach Alex all coming in ready to go against all our opponents. While losing to North Valley Baptist last year in the CCS playoffs, they are more prepared than ever to go even farther. Captain Jonathan Mendoza said, “I want us to win the league without a doubt, win at least 2 games in CCS, and finally have 3 players in all league.” Even with a more challenging league compared to last year. Our soccer program had an astonishing 12-2 record during the 2022-2023 season, with Coach Diego and Coach Chelin both wanting the soccer team to go undefeated in the league, knowing that this can be achieved with hard work and dedication. With their biggest challenge last season against LCPA, they can definitely beat them this year with their group of players. Finally, with a new, rebuilt cheer program, they have set their sights on becoming more than just the team that cheers for the other winter sports teams. With Coach Gomez at the head of the team, these wishes may just come true. Returning cheerleader Jasleen Batth said that she wants "More focus on the cheer and more people to really care and appreciate cheer. Also wanting to do more than just cheer for the school teams.”

Finals for the cross country team kicked off on Thursday, November 2nd, ending excitingly with the Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls both finishing 3rd in their respective races, automatically qualifying them for CCS Championships next Saturday on the 11th! In addition, it should be honorably noted that the JV boys also placed 3rd in their race and the JV girls finishing 2nd!
We’d like to honorably mention some of our medalists in the Finals meet: Sebastian Gutierrez for getting 2nd, Hannah Pinedo for getting 12th, Alex Le for getting 9th, and Isabella Vergara for getting 14th. Next, we’d mention our seniors who are leaving this year and received flowers at the event for their final cross country meet (except for CCS qualifiers who are running next week): Aaron Dang, Jairus Lagrimas, Alex Le, Matthew Pham, and Ryan Tran. We would also like to mention our Team Captains who’ve provided motivation and led us through the season to finals: Jairus Lagrimas, Isabella Vergara, Oscar Ramirez, and Jazmine De La Cruz. Finally, we would like to give thanks and appreciations for the coaches who provide the team their time and support through the practices they manage and resources they give bring the best out of the team: Ms. Kuga, Mr. Quintero, and Ms Doan. Honorable mentions include: Ms. C, Ms. Gomez, Coach Sway, and Mr. A, for driving them to their meets.
“This year’s season of Cross Country has been one of the greatest in my personal experience. We had such a tight bond as a community and had so much commitment in the team in terms of improving and competition-wise. When I see the amount of people who fight for spots on Varsity and improvement in general, it makes me happy to know that I was a part of it all. I thank each and every teammate for the commitment they gave to the team and I’m grateful for the fact that we haven’t just improved as runners, but in building a community with one another. Thank you for the best memories. Howl on Wolfpack!” -Jairus L.

The Little Things
Written by: Ceci Delgadillo 11th“Enjoy the little things'', “It’s the little things in life”, “Sometimes it’s the little things that count the most.”. With the amount of fuss surrounding the little things, they don't seem so little anymore. With the new addition of Yondr pouches, I have now paid more attention to the little things that I normally would’ve skipped seeing when I was on Instagram scrolling through an endless abyss of animals, baking and Taylor Swift posts.
One of the biggest little things that has affected our student body is our basketball hoops. This is a small problem for staff and the Alum Rock District, but a big problem for students. Although our students have persevered and have still been amazing on the blacktop and in game, it still affects how people view the game and makes it less fun and harder to play. Another little thing is the bathrooms. When talking to my male friends, our conversations usually lead to me joking about the new addition of soap to the boy's bathrooms this year. I laugh and ask how it's even possible to go through that many years without soap. Many responses are along the lines of the uncomfortable feeling of even going to the bathroom at school. The sinks are also a little thing affecting our student body. Similarly to Yondrs, the sinks also want us to socialize with our peers by pushing us to ask for help when pushing the sink down for water (Which isn’t the ideal way of making new friendships)
While little things may stop you from growing into your fullest potential, they can also help you grow beyond your current self. Like I said previously, the pinwheels in flower pots and flags around campus create a more spirited feeling in school. The awkward conversation with table mates because of the no phones policy can create new friendships you never would’ve thought could happen in the first place. Contrary to popular belief, the little things are big. It is time to start recognizing and taking them into account to grow, succeed and see how even the little changes make a big impact.

It's human nature to worry about what others think of you. It's a common phase that most adolescents go through. We often worry about others' opinions on our personality, style, and looks. What if I told you that it is actually healthy to be conscious of other people's opinions. Although, anything that is good for you can quickly turn bad for you. So, in turn, yes it's okay to be mindful of what others think of you, but once it consumes you and affects your daily life it can turn bad. Thus, how can we learn how to focus on ourselves?
In order to focus on ourselves we must learn how to take care of ourselves. In order to do this you can go outside and take a walk outside, and just enjoy the nature around you. You can also take some time to yourself by listening to music, watching your favorite movie, or even reading a book. You can even surround yourself with people you know you can be yourself with such as family or close friends.

How to be more responsible and organized is something everyone of us wonder on an everyday basis. As we all prepare ourselves to go to college, taking responsibility for your work is a very important trait everyone should learn. Responsibility can reduce stress and elevate joy in your life. By not having to worry about if an assignment is done, you can be more flexible with your schedule.
One way you could become more responsible and organized is by breaking the habit of procrastinating; get your work done as soon as possible before the deadline, and allow yourself to get things done more efficiently by giving you more time to think about your work. Being responsible could be jotting things down in class for important topics you have to learn, making everything you have to study for more accessible. Even just staying organized, such as keeping things you only need in your backpack, can help you succeed as you would not have to spend time pulling things out from your backpack. These are just a few ways you can improve your lifestyle. Find what works for you and stay on top of your work.

You hear it, talk about it, and probably experience it every now and then: Drama. As a disclaimer, information found here can often be found in other outside sources. While all the nuances of drama cannot not be touched upon in this column, it's meant to serve as a starting point. You're as unique as the drama around you and thus overall it’s your duty in getting over drama.
As long as drama is connected to you in a relevant manner, whether being the bystander in the friend group or the cause of the drama, you have a role in resolving the drama. As such I’ll be discussing these two roles broadly.
As a bystander, how you approach drama depends on the type of dramatic person you’re dealing with. If drama arose from an unresolved misunderstanding or perhaps an emotional divide, then being sympathetic and supportive, while still being an independent thinker is important. You’re bound to take sides in a conflict, but the difference is that you should have a logical reason in supporting one side. While it may seem counterintuitive, being a mediator between two conflicting sides can provide a greater sense of ease for both parties knowing they are being recognized and allow people to make amends. On the other hand if you’re dealing with drama-seeking people, ignorance may be a better option. Dramatics, whether attention-seeking or even spiteful, can thrive off of social divides, whether intentionally or unintentionally. While ignorance may discourage their behavior, constructive criticism on their behavior can also be effective in improving their behavior. Of course, it’s up to the individual's own internal struggles to be resolved if you’ll ever see any changes.
This brings me onto the creators of drama. While I can provide generic causes for their behavior, I have no right to label what truly causes them to act these ways. A dramatic’s behavior can come from internal and external sources. Insecurities, feelings of boredom, and other mental struggles can develop into attention-seeking behavior. Stress, the weight of responsibilities, and other external factors can cause people to be irritable. A person’s drama-seeking behavior may not even be realized by themselves. This is why recognition is the first step in resolving the root cause of drama. Support is the next step, whether done by yourself, or becoming open to friends, it already signifies that you are open to change and are willing to improve yourselves. As cliche as all of this sounds, we have created mental stigmas about emotions and insecurities that build up and create moments of conflict. If you truly wish to have the greatest peace of mind, free from drama, then look deep into yourself and reflect back who you see yourself and who you want to be.
