Why You Think Other People are Better Than You
Written by: Jasleen Batth 11th
Ever catch yourself thinking that others are somehow better than you? It's a common mental trap we all stumble into, but let's shift our perspective and explore why you might believe others have an upper hand.
Firstly, it's essential to understand that everyone brings something unique to the table. Your friend's talent for math doesn't make your knack for art any less valuable. It's not about being better or worse; it's about embracing diverse strengths.
Secondly, recognizing the good in others is like holding up a mirror. It reflects back at you, nudging you to discover your own capabilities and areas where you can grow. It's not about feeling inferior; it's about learning from the strengths of those around you.
Lastly, life is a team sport. When we appreciate what others bring to the mix, we build a stronger, more supportive community. It's not a competition; it's a collaboration where each person's unique qualities contribute to the collective success.
So, instead of thinking others are better, let's focus on the richness that comes from everyone playing their part. Break that old habit of comparing yourself to others and start recognizing the beauty in our differences and realizing that each one of us adds something valuable to the high school experience.

The World Inside & Outside Your Phone: Global Impact of Social Media
Written by: Cecilia Delgadillo 11th
In a world where mostly everything can be accessed through a six-inch mobile touch screen made up of nickel, gadolinium, and lithium (a.k.a a smartphone), the implications that come with this are grand. Before the times of mobile devices, the sharing and consumption of ideas, trends, and content had always been around. Flying pigeons from town to town notifying people of the drama or news circulating around, or women sitting on telephone benches for hours questioning Elvis’ true identity (Mafia Boss or Rockstar?). With social media, the circulation of media and ideas has become more accessible to the everyday person. The impact of social media has been anything but small and has multiple corners of the internet for consumers like you and me.
Social media is much more than just a way to create trends and mass consumerism. It is a way to spread news and raise awareness on topics that might not be getting as much attention on national news and television. An example of this is wizardbisan_1 and the war and genocide happening in Palestine at the moment. wizardbisan_1, Bisan Owda, is a Palestinian journalist documenting the real-life experiences that many Palestinians face during the mass bombings, gunfire, and invasions from Israel and the Israel Defense Forces. Her videos also share the small glimpses of hope that she and other Palestinians have when finding the little things that are quickly being taken away with the genocide going on. Her videos have been growing on TikTok and Instagram, shedding light on Palestine and the Gaza Strip. More and more attention being brought upon the genocide happening in Palestine has caused the formation of numerous GoFundMe pages and filters supporting the cause, with its proceeds going to the people suffering in Gaza. The impact that social media and creators such as Bisan have on spreading awareness about things the main news networks won’t, show the importance of social media and informing yourselves of the happenings of the world around you.
Basketball
With the boy’s basketball season gradually coming to an end, we are reaching the most stressful and intense point for the team. After their 64-54 loss against St. Thomas More, they couldn’t afford to lose another game. Since that game, they’ve been on a tear, beating DCP Alum Rock by 46-39, smoking out East Palo Alto Academy 67-47, and beating personal rivals North Valley Baptist High School in a very high intensity game, 58-39.
Leading the way during these games have been #23 Captain Christian Ademe Johnson, who dropped 53 points over the 3 aforementioned games and recently reached top 3 in scoring in all of the California D4 schools; #1 Captain Jonathan Mendoza, who's been pushing the team to their limits to make sure they don’t lose a game and has been averaging around 3-4 steals per game while also reaching top 25 in scoring out of all California D4 schools; #13 center Juan Ayala, making his presence known every game and dropping 40 points in the last 3 games, making sure even the biggest opponents know that they’re “too little”; reaching #28 in scoring for California D4 schools. #10 Forward Mathew Huyhn has had the task to guard each team’s star player and has kept every single one of them below average on their scoring, something no other school has been able to do, showing he is the top defender in the league without a doubt. With #24 Roger Cabalbag Jr. being KSJC’s hustle player, locking up team’s best guards, forcing turnovers, and overall playing amazing defense and running the fast break for KSJC, there’s no doubt he is the backbone of the team.
Other notable players helping KSJC through their run have been #33 Jheremy Jovero with his unmatched speed and lockdown defense, #30 Fernando Quiroz-Chavez being one of the biggest presences on defense and a knockdown shooter, and #15 Alfredo Hernandez running the team’s offense at the big. With 4 more games coming up: KSJC @ DCP El Primero on 2/1, KSJC @ Mid-Peninsula on 2/5, the anticipated hardest game of the season: KSJC @ St. Thomas More on 2/8, and finally, the day of Senior Night, KSJC vs DCP Alum Rock on 2/12. KSJC can’t afford to lose another game, and with tough opponents ahead of them, the team will need to put out all they have for a win.

Our student government has been navigating the delicate balance of event planning, and it's fair to say that they've faced their share of challenges. Dances to pep rallies and festivals, while infrequent, showcase their dedication to injecting fun into the school year. It's not every day you witness the school's heart beating a little faster during these events.
However, the spirit weeks, on the other hand, are more of a 'Where's Waldo' situation. Blink, and you might miss it. The themes are chosen with a hint of spontaneity and participation. Where's the school spirit?!?
Since we've finally upgraded from C-Commons to the small gym, dances have managed to bring students together in a celebration of shared moments. Right? Wrong. I can't speak for everyone, but a room full of 40 people max, standing around with one poster to indicate the "theme" doesn't give the ideal high school dance we all have in mind.
While there is an intended approach to bettering the school, there's an undeniable belief that ASG's weekly meetings are not putting much into effect. Nevertheless, let's appreciate our student government for the occasional sparks of joy they bring, even if the flame flickers now and then. Because if they don't , who will?
Just a PSA, this article is satire, I love ASG 🩷
How Technology is revolutionizing the classroom dynamics
Written by: Aaron Dang 12th
From chromebooks to Yondr pouches, our school has seen the beneficial and controversial effects of technology and its continued advancement. The only question is: What’s changed since they’ve been implemented? It wasn’t until the late 1900s that computers were first implemented in the classroom, and soon after they were connected by the World Wide Web, yet in these “few” years, we’ve seen the reformation of traditional ways of teaching and learning that are more accessible, efficient, and affordable to schools and students.
Accessibility
The main appeal of the Internet is the ease with which information can be accessed. I find myself googling more than 10 times a day and going down rabbit holes of article after article. Our reliance on the Internet is exemplified by the 8.5 billion searches processed each day. Information is no longer being found in textbooks but rather through websites. Not only is it easier, but it also comes in variety, allowing it to be personalized for students to better understand topics. A classroom is not the only proper learning environment, but anywhere is, thanks to the portability of Chromebooks and the variety of education websites that can essentially function as tutors for students. This is the reason we are seeing more and more students self-study certain subjects, especially AP courses, to get ahead in learning.
However, the Internet equally contains a variety of distracting content: games, streaming sites, and social media. I won’t lie, every day I visit The New York Times to play their daily Wordle or Crossword, read manga online, and distract myself with browser games. However, that doesn’t stop me from finishing my schoolwork. Of course, not all students act that way; many abuse that freedom as a form of procrastination. The Internet’s accessibility promotes complacency and confidence that they can finish their work on time and are too distracted to think otherwise. However, the power of technology is to adapt to such changes. For instance, our school uses Hapara Highlights to monitor student activity, and they can also block websites deemed inappropriate. However, I see these efforts as ineffective as students still have access to other content, which is inherent to the expansiveness of the Internet. It also undermines our school's investment in Yondr pouches, which prohibit access to phones during school time, not including special circumstances. While I already don’t use my phone during school, many have priorities that will require their phones, such as important phone calls, but others find that it will reduce distractions. Since Yondr pouches are still fairly new, it will require more time and data to see the effects they have on students. However, it brings up the next topic: efficiency.
Efficiency
Our addiction to our screens is caused by the constraint stream of information bombarded to our brain; these bursts of dopamine are usually more intense than when we learn, which causes us to be unfocused during school. While I’d like to say it’s a problem of self-control, technology has improved so much at doing these things that they are inadvertently harmful to students. The advancement of technology has created a classroom environment in which students are more likely to not listen to their teachers and more confident in slacking off.
Still, this may just be a minority in our student population, as technology can also efficiently relay information that supports our growth. Google Classroom, PowerSchool, and Illuminate are all tools that allow us to track our assignments and also see how well we do with them. This gives us feedback on how to improve, and generally speaking, many sites such as Khan Academy are vital resources in a classroom as they provide assignments that quickly communicate the outcome of our actions and greatly improve studying.
When speaking about efficiency, however, AI is a mainstream topic in today's world and in the classroom. Specifically, ChatGPT is a well-known chatbot. The reason it’s so popular is due to the massive database it was trained on, which allows it to respond effectively to questions and provide detailed answers. ChatGPT's used by students can offer potential enhancements to learning but can be overreliant upon and be used for an entire assignment. However, my experiences with ChatGPT have supported me in providing a structure for writing assignments, but overall, that’s all it’s meant to be. Achieving a balanced integration of AI into education requires acknowledging the risk of abuse.
Affordability
To end this article, it’s best to look into the prospective future of our school as technology improves. We’ve certainly come a long way from expensive, bulky computers to sleek devices. As technology improves, we may see devices becoming even more affordable, but they are often still costly. While many students may joke about the financial situation of our school, it’s vital that we invest properly in technology so that it will improve learning experiences for future generations. One of the most important problems that must be addressed is the gap in which communities may differ in access to technology, also known as the digital divide. Costs are often a large problem for certain rural communities, and while devices may become more affordable, there’s no telling what will happen as society exponentially grows toward a technological singularity.

For All The Shorties Out There
We all know a lot of you are suffering from being kinda short, and by kinda, I mean fun-sized, miniscule, little munchkins prancing around the school. Being short is a real interesting experience, especially having to look up in order to make eye contact, constantly getting made fun of for your height, and having to lie when people ask how tall you are. Though there are smallies out there who are proud of their height, it still sucks a lot, but lucky for my fellas with a height deficiency, we have gathered a whole THREE tips to help you grow taller.
Number one: POSTURE
Having good posture helps to add an inch or two, because when your body is straightened, you actually do grow a little. Not only that, growing in height is not the only thing good posture does for you; it also makes you appear more confident in yourself and helps you give off a friendlier aura. So even if you aren’t actually taller in people’s eyes, you’re taller in their hearts. However, bad posture can make you appear like a tiny, little dwarf with tiny little thoughts. Worst of all, it could also damage your spine and general body in the long run, leaving you as a middle-aged, balding creature with back pain as well. Good posture is a good habit to have; you get a lot of benefits out of it, and it makes you appear taller than you normally do.
Number two: THE ILLUSION OF FASHION
Styles such as high-waisted bottoms, proper color matching, and lengthy sleeves can also play into the illusion of tallness. For example, high-waisted bottoms can make your legs seem longer, and in return, you appear dominating and tall. Though high-waisted bottoms may not be for everyone, color matching and layering are. The colors and style of your outfit can help you seem larger when you match your shoes to your pants, wear vertical patterns on your tops and bottoms, or even play around with layers. When you research lengthy fashion, you can find clothes that match your style and play around with it a bit. Remember, experimentation is key!
Number three: SHOES
There’s always an easy way to look taller; heels and shoe lifts have become more popular to see and have access to. Of course, we all know what they are and what they look like. Plus, it's a more natural way of gaining height and is very effective as well. You can find shoe lifts online or in stores, and to use them, you just place them in the heels of your shoes to give them that extra lift. However, if you want to look like an absolute tall baddie, heels are your way to go. They come in many styles, and they're pretty easy to find. You can even wear them if you’re a mascot, because nobody actually cares if you do; it won’t really make a difference. But if you want that very obvious height difference without heels, platforms do the same thing with a much wider base, and it’s very stylish, especially for all the alternative fellas (*mini edition).
All in all, these are just some tips to help you look taller, among many others, but from what I've seen on the internet, these tips are some of the most helpful. Speaking on behalf of Santa's elves, I found that the tips I listed are really helpful for looking tall. I admit, I've tried some of them out myself, and they worked as intended, though they won’t make too much of a height difference. If you decide to take this advice, I hope it’ll stop people from using your head as an armrest.

How do you get your driver’s license? It’s not a secret that many young students would want to start driving early, which carries numerous advantages, including independence, not having to rely on your parents to drive you to places you are in need of, greater safety than having to walk or utilize public transport, and lifelong skills, as driving is an ability that you have to acquire throughout your adult years. By practicing how to drive early, you will find it easier than if you had to learn it when you're an adult, as you'll be able to quickly adapt. At last, it’s necessary to be able to travel to places you would need to without much hassle.
For you to be eligible for a driver's license, you must first apply for your own driver's permit, which permits you to take driving lessons either through your parents or an authorized driving instructor. In addition, you would be required to pass the standardized driving test. It is a requirement in order to get a driver's license. One way that you would be able to pass this test is by learning the traffic laws. It's a good way to get comfortable with the test. You can get a Driver's Handbook from the DMV, which will help you study and become familiar with road signs, rules, and regulations. When you pass the written portion of the driver's test, you are able to arrange a time to take your driving test at your local DMV. whether you pass, you may ultimately be able to eventually receive your own driver’s license.
Teenager drivers should be aware that regardless of whether they are able to receive a driver's license at such a young age, it nonetheless only counts as a student permit, which furthers the need for safety precautions and more laws to be performed. For instance, there is a driving curfew as well as rules regarding who you are permitted to drive with.

Do you struggle to try new things? Talk to new people? Many people are like this, they refuse or avoid new experiences. Although they may feel comfortable, they are missing out on crazy fun, and exciting once-in-a-lifetime adventures. However, it takes a lot of time and practice to get people out of their comfort zone. So, here are three tips on how to put yourself out there.
Be confident
Having confidence is key to creating new experiences. It allows you to take risks without any fear. One way you can increase your confidence is to talk to more people. You can start by initiating conversations with close friends and family members, then gradually work your way up to strangers; This will help you approach new people and open yourself up.
Be Charismatic
Being charismatic is vital for appearing friendly and approachable. Making new friends and connections will be much easier if you are appealing to talk to. To do this, you should make sure to maintain eye contact and listen more when communicating. Looking like you care even though you don’t goes a long way, just make sure you don’t overdo it! Another way is to not be a pushover. Always agreeing makes people think you are “fake”, so don’t be afraid to say your own opinions.
Develop a New Hobby
After you master the previous tips, you should develop a hobby. Hobbies like sports, fitness, cooking, etc., will make it extremely easy for you to connect with new people. Moreover, it will help keep a conversation alive as you have more things to talk about. At first, it will be a struggle, but it will get easier and more rewarding the more you commit.
Putting yourself out there will be hard, but making an effort will guarantee that you are a more interesting and fun person.
