Different food around the world: Philippines
Written by: Rhiane Kate Dalisay 10th
Numerous countries offer diverse cultures, which lead to a wide range of cuisine options. Every culture has a dish that it is particularly proud of, whether it is a special method of preparing food or an exceptional flavor that many people find endearing. Every nation has a dish that it is fond of. The Philippines refers to this food as adobo. Everywhere you go in the Philippines, you may find people serving adobo. Some may even add their own spin to the traditional meal, but adobo is generally a quite adaptable dish that goes well with a variety of ingredients. A classic example is chicken adobo, but it also pairs well with pork or beef. Of course, different regions of the Philippines have different varieties of Adobo. For example, "adobong puti" is a dish called "adobo," where "puti" means white. Although the dish isn't actually white, its ingredients include ingredients like salt, vinegar, and garlic, which is how it got its name. However, the Visayas region of the Philippines is where this particular adobo dish originated.
Even though there are many variations of adobo, the most commonly eaten one is nearly always made with chicken. In order to cook adobo, first take a separate bowl and add vinegar, soy sauce, palm sugar, crushed pepper, crushed garlic, bay leaves, and crushed pepper to the chicken. The amount of water to add depends on how many servings you plan to create. One tip for cooking adobo is to marinate the chicken for more than an hour. This will allow the taste of the chicken to soak up more, making the finished dish more flavorful. Afterwards, the chicken is placed in an oil-coated pan and cooked until it turns golden brown. The marinade sauce is then re-added to the pan and simmered for around 45 minutes, make sure to flip the chicken halfway each time to make sure that it’s cooked evenly on each side. After that you can freely transfer your adobo to a bowl and it’s ready to be served. Adobo is a very flavorful dish; some varieties can be tangy, while others can be sweet. In my opinion, everyone can enjoy adobo; they just need to find the version that best suits their taste buds. Therefore, if you try this particular version of adobo and find that it's not to your taste, don't worry—you can probably find one that you'll love with plenty of experimentation on different kinds.

It’s A Bird! It’s A Plane! It’s A…Second Moon?
Written by: Eliana Ramirez Guzman 11th
That’s right, you read the title right, a second moon or at least an asteroid that astronomers have collectively decided to dub a mini-moon or 2024 PT5 as it’s been officially named. While the mini-moon will be extremely hard to see from Earth at just about 10 meters in size, its presence in the night sky will nonetheless be there for the next two months. The asteroid, which was discovered on August 7th by NASA, originated from the Arjuna asteroid belt where it is likely to return after it eventually breaks free of Earth’s gravitational orbit.
Mini-moons can actually come in multiple types according to research done on the subject. The first is ‘temporary captured orbiters’, long periods in which asteroids do one or more orbits around the Earth and can remain in the planet’s orbit for many months or even years. The second, which does include the upcoming mini-moon, are ‘temporary captured flybys’ as they do not complete one orbit and remain in Earth’s orbit for a very short period of time.
NASA has its own program that actually tracks the locations and orbits of tens of thousands of asteroids with data pages for including their orbital parameters and close approach summaries. Paul Chodas, director of the Center for Near Earth Object Studies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion, believes that 2024 PT5 may actually be a possible piece from an impact on our current moon, meaning the upcoming mini-moon may have once been a part of the original moon. So from September 29 up until November 25, when looking up at the night sky, you can remind yourself of the second little moon up there that may have once been a part of our original moon.
Yondr: Strategic Investment or Financial Burden
Written by: Eric Dang 11th
On an unfortunate summer day as most of us were relaxing and enjoying our break, we received a message from school which signaled the start of the year. Our therapeutic rest period had come to a stop as our summer break ended earlier than we would’ve preferred. Additionally, every student had to come in the week before the first day of school for material pick-up day. On that day, some of us got our chromebooks for the first time, perhaps even a textbook or two, as well as our schedules! These items that the school gave us differed between our grades, but one thing that every student got was the dreaded Yondr Pouch. Being around since 2014, Yondr Pouches serve a variety of purposes, one being a way for schools to prevent the usage of phones in the classroom.
Starting last year, our beloved school decided that it was time for us KSJC students to experience the funs and joys of Yondr. Those joys being the loss of phone privileges at school, and the frantic rush at the end of the day to unlock them. Don’t get me wrong though, there were a lot of phone incidents at school, plus cases where students would use their phone without anyone knowing, and I’m not talking about usage during lunch time. No seriously, if I had to estimate, there would probably be at least 1 person in each class using their phone at a given time. So, I understand why our school wished to take action, after all, schools value the education of their students. Probably reputation as well, but mostly the betterment of the students I hope. Although, I’m not exactly sure if Yondr was the right way to endorse a change. These pouches did enact immediate reform in the school: there is significantly less usage of phones on campus, due to the fact most of us literally can’t access them, but also increased attention in the absence of distractions.
Yondr also allows creativity to be fostered in the mind. Not as in wanting to know more about actual school subjects, but more curious to how they could be opened. For instance “Can I open it with my bare hands?”, or maybe even “How can I bypass the system entirely?”. Truly, a multipurpose tool that not only helps the learning of students but also allows them to use their brain. It really has caused a wave of thought in the student body to the point that it just might spark another age of enlightenment. All of which were most likely anticipated by the school when they invested into Yondr Pouches. But were they truly the best option?
Looking at our school’s financial situation, I won’t sugarcoat it, we’re broke. If our campus and lack of a gym wasn’t already enough of a clue, we also have a teacher shortage. Now I’m not trying to bring down the school simply because we have scarce funding, but when considering how last year's AP Tests were only partially covered when this wasn’t the case in previous years, I think something’s amiss. Unless Yondr has some form of financial reduction contract with its partnering schools, having magnet-locking pouches for every student isn’t cheap. It would’ve been fine if this was the only purchase they made and then saved up for further things like events, but in the beginning of this year, more were purchased. This is probably because everyone was breaking their Yondrs and bending the needles which is, and will, still occur. Furthermore, our school also recently purchased a costume for our wolf mascot. Out of curiosity, I looked up “wolf mascot costumes” and found a similar looking one that was either $400 or $1600. I’m not sure if these are the exact same brand, but I can only hope ours wasn't over a thousand dollars. There has also been construction going on in the black top, so unless another school is the cause of that, that’s also a hefty cost upon us. Examining all of these purchases, clearly we must actually have a lot of money so I must be concerned over nothing.
Anyways, all of these decisions benefit us in some way or another, yet what good are benefits if the school they help might cease to exist. The investment in Yondrs might also be a waste since as mentioned, many break their Yondrs anyways, so unless they are only supposed to induce psychological fear to not use phones rather than to store the phones, then they aren’t really fulfilling their entire purpose. As Yondrs continue being relevant in our school lives, let's take precautions so we don’t end up digging our own financial grave.
(Disclaimer: I don’t know the exact expenses or situation of our school, so I can only infer. Also, this article is satire)
Baseless Claim
Written by: Seah Dalisay 9th
Former President Trump said: "In Springfield, [Immigrants] are eating the dogs. The people that came in, they are eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there." In his recent debate at ABC with VP Kamala Harris.
Are immigrants from Haiti eating domestic pets in a small Ohio city? There are no credible reports of this claim, but where did it come from?
The claims of immigrants coming in came from many different sources although the one that stuck out the most was Former President Trump's recent debate. Just before that, on the 27th of August, at the Springfield City Commission, a resident launched a speech against Haitian immigrants. He talked about his grievance about ducks being slaughtered for food and accused city officials of being paid to bring immigrants to Ohio illegally.
During the presidential debate on Tuesday, Former President Trump claimed to have seen, “people on television [saying] ‘My dog was taken and used for food’”. BBC, CNN, and CBS looked into this claim and found no television interviews supporting it.
Separately, a news report- as well as a police officer’s body cam showing a woman being arrested for killing and eating a cat has been circulating online. Many commentators referred to the woman being Haitian and pointed to a report as evidence to the baseless claim that Haitian immigrants have been engaged in such acts. However this arrest took place in Canton, Ohio about 170 miles away from Springfield. Canton police told reporters, “We have not dealt with any complaints of Haitian immigrants at all.”
Other claims have been surfacing the internet about a man carrying what appeared to be a dead goose in Columbus, Ohio. Federalist also published an audio recording of a non-emergency call of a caller claiming that they saw four Haitians carrying four geese. Articles featured the police report from Clark County Sheriff's Office about the call, which was made on 26th of august. BBC verified from the sheriff's office, asking if these audio recordings and police reports were true. It directed them to a Springfield City government spokesperson who said “These claims were not substantiated.”
So what do you think? Are immigrants in Ohio Springfield actually eating pets? Or are these accusations just false?
