Greatest Addition to KSJC: Yonders
Written by: Cesar Vilchis 11th
I think I speak for everyone when I say we all LOVE Yondrs. For our first year with Yondr, I have heard no blabber about it being an inconvenience; I have only heard people praising them since the day we got ours a week prior to school starting. The implementation of Yondrs has had zero problems with our school, it has brought nothing but pros.
If we were to accidentally forget to bring our Yondrs, well, there is no need to stress, for our teachers have spare Yondrs for us! These loaner Yondrs are beautifully applied with yellow paint that perfectly resembles our school colors! But don’t forget, if you forget your Yondr more than twice, there are consequences!
But we all know it, there are students who can take out their phones from their Yondr. I can't believe the revolting behavior these students have toward having full access to contacting their parents, to reading the time and not a clock at the top of a classroom wall that is nearly always off by minutes or up to an hour.
A teacher recently informed me that another KIPP school has had Yondrs for a couple of years now, which I found intriguing. That KIPP school has their students turn in their phones for 6 weeks if they forget their Yondrs a few times, and hearing that got me thinking. Me and my classmates all already love Yondrs, if this totally fair rule were part of our policy, gosh, would we all love it even more!
While unfortunately there are Yondr haters in our school, just remember that Yondrs have lowered our screen time, so keep that in mind next time you debate about Yondrs.

Superstitions: A Super Way To Live
Written by: Cecilia Delgadillo 11th
Knocking on wood, seeing a black cat, spilling salt, and walking under ladders are just some of the many superstitions. Superstitions are defined as “a belief or practice resulting from ignorance, fear of the unknown, trust in magic or chance, or a false conception of causation." They have been around for generations and have been passed on for years. For example, the first time I spilled salt at dinner, my mom immediately made me pinch some and throw it over my shoulder, something she learned from her mom as well.
Although superstitions have had a bad reputation since the dawn of time, they are actually pretty beneficial. They have more advantages than disadvantages.
With testing season coming up, it has me and many others finding ourselves purposely avoiding superstitions or creating some of our own. SBAC, a state test that seems like it can define your whole life, is one of the many worries I have had about this year. Henceforth, to prepare for the test, I have tried my luck with positive superstitions of rubbing my necklace four (my personal lucky number) times and wishing for a passing grade on a fallen eyelash. To some, there are easier and more straightforward ways of preparing for the test with a guaranteed passing grade, like simply studying, but with how much power superstitions hold over fate, is that really necessary? I would rather avoid all ladders, cats, mirrors, and umbrellas than have to open Khan Academy or do any practice homework.
In this upcoming testing season, you now have another way to "study." Adding to the pressure of studying for AP exams, finals, and SBAC tests, you can now study with a new way of believing superstitions. These superstitions can be bad or they can be good, but you now have a certified way of passing all your tests this upcoming semester (knock on wood!).
Theater Lovers, We Need You
Written by: Charlotte Zeng 10th
Are you interested in background art? Or craft-making? Are you interested in theatrical acting? Maybe costume design! Well, we’ve got the club for you! KSJC’s students are re-introducing the theater club to the school and making it just as fun as ever.
One of the ways we’re doing this is by introducing more games and strategies to help you improve your acting skills. Expect many improv games and tongue twisters; learn to bounce back from mistakes when you mess up on stage. We will teach you how to speak with emotion as well as study your characters to help you understand how to stay in character even as you make mistakes. Although memorizing a bunch of lines sounds difficult, there are many strategies to help you remember, and you can always rehearse it during club hours.
And for the crew, there are many things for you to do as well! These include painting background sets, making props, articulating costumes, learning how to manage the lights, and helping out with sound effects. The crew can also join in on the improv games, help other cast members rehearse, and learn a lot about the technical side of theater.
We’ve already chosen the play that we’re planning to present to you all, which is Arthur Miller's “Death of a Salesman." Though this play is a bit more on the serious side, if you’re interested, it’s about a bunch of flashbacks and references to a salesman’s life before he dies. The story contains themes of the American dream, suicide, and some familial issues and is a classic among many other plays.

Dubai's Two Years Worth of Rainfall in One Day
Written by: Rhiane Kate 9th
“...to bring rain on the uninhabited land and on the desert where no man lives, to satisfy the barren and desolate ground, and to make the seeds of grass sprout?” (Job 38:25–27, Amplified Bible), Many speculate if what is said in the Bible is true, as how can a dessert get rain, and if more future properties will come true. When Dubai, a country located directly in the Arabian Desert, which on average only receives 3.73 inches of rain every year, received more than 5 inches (2 years worth) of rain on April 17, 2024, that left many of their malls, roads, and infrastructure flooded, and that also caused a few deaths to be confirmed due to the massive flooding. Dubai’s massive rainfall caused many problems for Dubai's citizens, as their homes have been washed away. Driving on the roads is not ideal as, due to the massive flooding, their cars would sink. This unusual event poses a question to a lot of people: What is the real cause of Dubai’s flooding?
Online, the battle about whether cloud seeding or greenhouse warming has caused discontent. Many have shared and argued their opinions on the real cause of Dubai’s recent massive flooding, but as of now, scientists and weather forecasters have confirmed that the cause of the flooding is due to the large amount of moisture that has been building up in the atmosphere due to the warm seas, which eventually falls as rain over the Arabian Peninsula (greenhouse warming). Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, states, “Did cloud seeding play a role? Likely no… But how about climate change? Likely yes!”. To understand the Rebuttals side we have to first understand what cloud seeding is which is essentially a method scientists do that is putting tiny particles of nuclei into the atmosphere that attach to the clouds that after a cloud seeding takes place create snowflakes that eventually grow and fall on earth increasing precipitation, Danie Swain counteracts this argument again by stating that “it's unlikely that a cloud seeding operation would move forward given the well-forecast intense rainfall”, while Meteorologist Ryan Maue, former chief scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration agrees with Swain and gave a definitive answer that “If that occurred with cloud seeding, they'd have water all the time," he said. "When it comes to controlling individual rain storms, we are not anywhere close to that. And if we were capable of doing that, I think we would be capable of solving many more difficult problems than creating a rain shower over Dubai.

I saw the Devil today
With horns that curved away from his head
I saw him on that hill, gnashing his teeth against the earth to pull mother nature's children from her grasp
He attacked his brother! Using his own crown to charge against the innocent
I saw the Devil today, his irises slanted in the wrong direction,
His beard knotted in lies,
Had hooves that trampled and left unwanted marks,
And how he stares at the lamb with malice in those putrid eyes!
A creature of hell doesn't belong here!
Oh God! Save the poor Lamb from his mischief
He'll be sure to rope her towards the wolves
And leak her red hot death over the chips of dirt, infecting her skin with unholiness
But she remains pure, with pure white fleece that can never be dirtied
The Lamb! Who cries for her mother
The Lamb! Who remains helpless in all her strength
The Devil. Who with his darkened fingers I refuse to allow into my sanctuary
You cannot heed the lamb to sin, sly creature!
My woolen Eve must be sheltered from the song of the snake
O God!
Today, I'll rid this land of evil
And soon, the Devil is to be dead
“Called a twin the wrong name”
“I said happy birthday to my talking stage the day before her ACTUAL birthday”
“I ChatGPT my application for volunteer hours but got rejected anyways”
“The biggest mistake I did was 3 summer ago I broke a girl's front tooth and I don't know what happened to her. ”
“I told my gf at the time she deserved to be loved then ditched her for someone else because I thought the other girl was prettier, I couldn't control it.”
“When they act different around their friends”
“It's kinda an ick when they bet all of their money on a fight or a game or smth”
