OSCARS 2024 - Long Live Hollywood!
Written by: Cecilia Delgadillo 11th
The Oscars have been a long standing award show celebrating film and has celebrated its 96th ceremony on March 10th 2024. This year's ceremony was filled with epic wins, moving performances and of course celebrity gossip. Continue reading below to learn more!
Just across the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, protesters fighting for a ceasefire in Palestine shut down Sunset Boulevard and called attention to the genocide happening in Palestine. The protest caused production of the awards show to be postponed to five minutes later. Protesters called out the Oscars and its audience by saying, “While you’re watching, bombs are dropping.” The protest and calling for a ceasefire were also very prevalent inside the awards ceremony. Stars and guests, such as Poor Things’ Ramy Yousseff and Mark Ruffalo, wore pins in support of a ceasefire in Palestine. After winning the award for Best International Feature Film for The Zone of Interest, a movie centered around the Holocaust, director Jonathan Glazer spoke out against Israel and the attacks on Palestine by saying, “Our film shows where dehumanization leads, at its worst. It shaped all of our past and present. Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation, which has led to conflict for so many innocent people. Whether the victims of October 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?”
It wouldn’t be the Oscars if there weren't jaw-dropping performances. Critically acclaimed songs such as “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eiish were performed and caused a standing ovation from not only the audience inside the Dolby Theater but also audiences at home. Another moving performance was from Scott George and the Osage Singers during “A Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)." The song was a touching moment, making much of the audience feel seen and represented in a way they hadn't before. Jon Batiste and Becky G both gave amazing performances in their own way, with Batiste singing melodically at a piano while Becky G sang with a Latina choir, blending the symphony of a choir with the song's reggaeton beats. However, one of the most memorable moments of the night went to Ryan Gosling’s performance of “Im Just Ken.” His rockstar-esque performance, accompanied by Slash, and the backing vocals of Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and America Ferreria at one point earned solid reactions from the crowd, including a bright smile from esteemed director Martin Scorsese. This performance was also very meaningful to La La Land fans, who got to see Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling reconnect over singing “My name is Ken, and so am I.”
To sum up, the Oscars are the final boss of Hollywood award shows. You've seen the film do great in theaters, box offices, film festivals, and such, but the Oscars are what define the film and what makes up the film for some. For acting, the Big 4 were a tight race, and some people (including myself) thought what if we just split the Oscar and had a tie, but to Hollywood's big executives, we can’t. The Oscar for Best Supporting Actor went to Robert Downey Jr. for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. He had many to thank, including his terrible childhood, the academy, and his wife. The Best Supporting Actress went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for Mary in The Holdovers. Her tearful speech recognized the importance of making a mark by saying, “When I said I don’t see myself, you said that’s fine; we’re going to forge our own path.”. Best Actor went to Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer. Murphy dedicated his much-anticipated win to peacemakers everywhere. Emma Stone won for Best Actress in Poor Things as Bella Baxter. Stone was in awe as she walked up the stage and gave her speech. Her speech recognized the other actresses and celebrated the making of movies altogether. A full list of winners can be read here:

Even better than the Oscars themselves are the parties that come after. The most notable being the Vanity Fair Oscars Party. Adorned from head to toe in designer, stars from Cardi B to Margot Robbie joined friends and fellow nominees at the infamous party. And although drama was recognized and nominated during the award show, that did not stop the stars from creating their own drama offscreen. New couples such as Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan stepped foot onto the scene and made their grossly cute debuts on the red carpet or in the photo booth. Old couples broke up... Did Jay Z send flowers to another woman who wasn’t Beyonce? Until I get invited to the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, I cannot guarantee what truly happened, but when the time comes, I will be an open book.

Why Is Older Music Blowing Up?
Written by: Elijah Vazquez 11th
Song: "Love"
Songs: "September" "Let's Groove"
Album: "Let's Start Here"
If you’ve been on the internet recently, there is a chance you may have noticed that older music and artists are starting to blow up again, and seemingly out of nowhere as well. With the two biggest examples of this being the song “Love” by Keysha Cole and the American R&B band Earth, Wind and Fire. While “Love” is definitely more recently blowing up compared to Earth, Wind and Fire, yet they both have received very similar ways of blowing up. To talk about Earth, Wind and Fire, I think there are multiple areas to credit their recent spike in popularity.
Two of the biggest reasons for their sudden popularity are that, one, social media really grabbed onto two of their biggest songs, “September” and “Let’s Groove”. Both of these songs have such a big use in social media like Instagram and TikTok, pushing them to more mainstream stardom. I believe the other reason is for the massive blowup of old school style music being made by newer artists. With the music group Silk Sonic really bringing back 1970’s R&B style, very similar to Earth, Wind and Fire. Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak really revitalized this sound to a newer generation. I firmly believe this also inspired many newer artists to revitalize older sounds that haven’t been mainstream in this newer generation. A big example of this being Lil Yachty’s 2023 album “Let’s Start Here” which was a psychedelic rock album, a sound really unheard of in 2023.
With these old sounds being revived, older artists being introduced into a newer generation, there should be no surprise that many older songs have also seen a huge spike in popularity. The main offender of this being Keysha Cole’s “Love” which feels like it's being played all around the world. If you’ve been on social media for the last couple months, you’ve no doubt heard this song. Now, the biggest reason for this song and many other older songs beginning to be played once again is the simple reason that they are just really good. The fact that all these songs are of high quality that seem to have been ahead of their time. This sole reason is the biggest factor as to why these songs are suddenly blowing up again.
Creator of "Dragon Ball Z" Passing
Written by: Eliana Ramirez 10th
Akira Toriyama, known widely for creating the successful manga and anime franchise ‘Dragon Ball’, was officially announced dead on March 1st at the age of 68. The franchise’s official website confirmed that his death was caused by acute subdural hematoma, a critical medical condition that causes blood to collect between the skull and the brain. The website also expressed heavy gratitude towards his fans, hoping that his “unique works will continue to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.”
Toriyama’s introduction to the manga industry first began when he entered a competition for up-and-coming writers in the Weekly Shonen Jump comic magazine. His submissions, although they didn’t win, attracted the attention of Kazuhiko Torishima, who worked at the manga giant and would eventually become Toriyama’s editor. This meeting led to Toriyama making his debut with ‘Wonder Island’ in 1978, which soon followed with his more popular works such as ‘Dr. Slump’ and ‘Dragon Ball’ for Weekly Shonen Jump. ‘Dragon Ball’ in particular became an international phenomenon, kicking off Toriyama’s career as a profound manga writer. Soon after his death, tributes began pouring in from all over the world from renowned creators who had been inspired by his multiple works. “It’s too soon... Sadness washes over me when I think about how I will never see him again,” Eiichiro Oda, author of ‘One Piece’, stated on the official Shonen Jump’s website. “May heaven be the joyous world he envisioned.” Toriyama is due to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Tokyo Anime Awards Festival.
The Crouton Connoisseurs
Written by: Jairus Lagrimas 12th
Introduction to the Column:
For those who are unaware of what Croutons are or who Crouton Connoisseurs are, that is what this short description is for. Croutons are, in short, a delicacy a form of dried bread perfectly seasoned with a variety of flavoring to add a pop of color within the flavor profile of, most oftenly, salads. However, the Connoisseurs are a group who recognize Croutons more than their simple seeming appearance. Instead of allowing Croutons to seep into the background of the flavor profile, we allow the delicate song and dance of their flavor to take center stage. To simplify, we try each crouton and review it for everyone to know.
As a group, we hope to shed light on an often overlooked snack and ask the question that everyone has refused to ask: What crouton should I get this week?
The Connoisseurs:
After a thorough and holistic review process, we will rate each crouton on a scale of 1-5 croutons: 1 being repulsive and 5 being among the best. The process is based on palate excitation, price, and nutrition. Forged over a love of food and especially croutons, our group of reviewers are diverse and hope to provide varying and thought provoking analysis for as many people as possible.
Bartholomew: An objective reviewer that utilizes a pragmatic approach to reviewing each crouton based on its multiple uses and a more general review based on which flavor profiles it may complement. Extremely meticulous with food and has a palette largely developed from Indian cuisine and thus, deeply enjoys savory foods.
Kylie Clark: A short spoken critic.
James: I’m lovin’ the croutons yo, from shore to shore, these raps flowing as much as melted plastic–I’m elastic.
Tax Toucan: A poet.
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III WRC Ralliart: A meticulous reviewer built upon the belief of enjoying each and every flavor…his cholesterol is gonna take a hit from this.
Crouton Cing: This is something that I like. A pop against the short, savory, crunchy crispy and sometimes too much so to be considered. The Cing Obsessed with “it” now please tell me what “it” is when the mouth becomes locked from “it” being adjacent to the flavor “bitter”.
Mrs. Cubbison’s Garlic and Cheese Croutons:
Bartholomew’s Review:
Mrs. Cubbisons provide a mellow flavor playing within the umami of nearly anyone’s palette creating a deep flavor that stimulates in much lower registers than one I would expect. The cheese is apparent in some bites and more garlic than others which serves as my biggest gripe with this product. Although the flavor is deep and enjoyable, croutons through the bag have inconsistent flavoring; some croutons may have a deep cheese flavoring other deep garlic, and others might be outright burnt. I would imagine a wonderful pairing with any salad, allowing a relatively subtle contrast to tomatoes and ranch (if you are into that) within any salad. However, sodium content is relatively high creating a great flavor that may also be dangerous if sodium is already a prominent component in your diet (for example eating salt flavored ramen). For $6.99, you receive a somewhat generous portion being able to thoroughly enjoy yourself but if one were to share with others, it would dissipate much too quickly. Overall I would give this produce a ⅘ croutons for being above par but definitely not among the greatest.
Rating: ⅘ Croutons
Kylie Clark’s Review: Shi was aight
Rating: ⅗ Croutons
James’ Review:
I got rhymes like dimes
In the time that I spend reminiscing ‘about the broker times
With a hint of lime
As cracks back along as write these f-ing raps,
This is only bit that only let take free real estate, rip
Sent to the grave
Unmarked or engraved, who to say
On my pallet to that’s what will determine
On doomsday
That is what my tomb would say
As I eat the croutons my soul burns ablaze
My passion for them gets a raise
Try these croutons yo,
They fire, no snow
Rating: 5/5 Croutons
The Tax Toucan’s Review: Le Crouton - A Poem
Have thou posses thy crouton?
For tis taste is one of elegance
Full of richness behind intelligence
Per one tis cheesy and delightful
Und zis bag is full and plentiful
The hardened bread like autumn leaves
The Tax Toucan’s Review: Le Crouton - A Poem
Have thou posses thy crouton?
For tis taste is one of elegance
Full of richness behind intelligence
Per one tis cheesy and delightful
Und zis bag is full and plentiful
The hardened bread like autumn leaves
Left no crumbs but within thee
Only until the bag is void and empty
Shall I admit I’ve felt unworthy
For the scent of delight and that of intelligence
Hast now indulged me as though necessitent
Where or what has the richness become?
For thee has bewitched me as though a crumb
Too much for simple bread to allow
It was in fact thy crouton, that hast possessed thou.
Rating: ⅘ Croutons
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III WRC Ralliart’s Review:
Y’know how much sodium this crouton had? 60 grams of sodium from 20 pieces of croutons… EACH PIECE OF CROUTON HAS ROUGHLY 3 GRAMS OF SODIUM!!! I’m getting kidney stones…
Wait, I calculated that wrong. Each serving size is 2 tablespoons of the croutons, so around 8 croutons per serving size, SO THERE ARE AROUND 7-8 GRAMS OF SODIUM PER CROUTON!!!
Rating: 3.5/5 Croutons
The Cing's Review:
This flavor profile is brown and sticky. I would never bring it upon myself to try something so meaningless.

Tik Tok Ban In The U.S
Written by: Rhiane Kate 9th
It's no secret that the app "Tik Tok" has an enormous effect on all of our lives—roughly one billion users use it each month. TikTok is a platform that provides information about the world in addition to entertainment. It additionally helps 7 million small businesses earn a living. Due to Tiktok's widely recognized platform, a lot of people can post videos and songs that become popular and go viral, which enables them to make money. Tiktok also has a STEM function that allows users to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. On TikTok, there are several kinds of creators, and they all have something special to offer. Although each person is different, we can all agree that they have the ability to make people smile. It has the ability to educate and persuade people while earning a career from it. The announcement that Tiktok was considered banned a few months ago has attracted a lot of attention lately. Considering that the government intends to enact a bill that would make it possible for Tiktok to be restricted in American app stores and would not enable even VPN to be used in order to have access.
Senates argue that because of TikTok's ties to China, the platform can be used to post particular content that could influence public opinion in the United States and to spy on American citizens. H.R. 7521, referred to as the "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Application Act," makes this claim. The U.S. House of Representatives implemented a law on March 13, 2024, giving ByteDance, the Chinese owner of Tiktok, roughly five months to sell the app to an American company. If they don't, they risk being banned. According to the bill, anyone who uses Tik Tok after it was banned would have to pay a fine that's approximately $5000. Since Apple and Google would prefer not to pay billions of dollars, they would be forced to cooperate. The House of Representatives already voted 352 to 65; in addition, according to President Joe Biden, he would be ready to sign the bill into law when it reaches his desk. The United States government, though, is aware that many Tik Tok users would not be up for this bill, and they know that it may significantly influence the upcoming election, taking into account that numerous have made threats to vote for alternate candidates if the vote is passed. Coincidentally, former President Donald Trump, who is hoping to be reelected, indicated that he’s against banning Tik Tok, which could have an effect on the general population's vote.

Have no rizz? Don't want to be rizzed?: WE GOTCHA!
Some people out there have no creativity when it comes to social interaction, so we’ve conspired a set of pickup/rejection lines to use whenever necessary.
The Pickup lines:
You remind me of summer, cause you’re really hot
Hey! You have nice arms, but i think it’ll look better around me
You don’t have a license? Then how did you drive me crazy for you
Two plus two equals five, seven plus nine equals four. So I might not know my numbers, but i’d be happy to get yours
Let’s play a game! I’ll be the FBI, and you can be my most wanted
If you were a candy, you’d be a sweetheart
Are you my speeding ticket? Cause you’re looking “FINE”
I can’t be a robber, cause i’ll only ever try to steal your heart
I’ve heard how many licks it takes to get to the core of a jawbreaker, but can you tell me how many roses it takes to get to your heart?
I’ll make sure you stay on my left, cause I know I’m right for you
The Rejection lines:
Your forehead could fit a small country, and i’m not the type to travel
Maybe when you can stop looking in two directions and see how ugly you are, you’d understand why I said no
You remind me of an airhorn, loud and annoying
Do you live in a hospital? Cause you look like you’ve got tuberculosis, get some help.
Let’s play a game! I’ll be the dad and you’ll never see me again
When i saw you for the first time I couldn’t breathe, cause your scent gave me heartburn
I usually believe in following my dreams, but dating you sounds like a nightmare
Do you work in a lead factory? You look like it.
Is that a raisin? Cause it definitely isn’t a date.
Roses are red, violets are blue, i’d rather eat rat poison, then ever go out with you
Finding your style can sometimes be difficult, but there are many different ways to find your own.
Social media
This is a good start to finding your style online. By looking at platforms like Pinterest or TikTok, you can find different aesthetics that may suit you. Pinterest also gives you recommendations based on what you pin to save. These apps help you see the different styles that are currently trending, like Y2K, streetwear, or soft girl core. It is a good way to make a wishlist and save inspirations you see online. You can even take an online quiz to learn what clothing style suits you. What Is My Clothing Aesthetic? Quiz - ProProfs Quiz
Going to the mall
When you go to the mall, there are various options for you to choose from. For example, at Eastridge Mall, you can go to the store “Down to Earth” for a more vintage look, or you can go to Forever 21. To find a more trendy look. Another benefit of going in-store is that you can try on clothes and have a more hands-on experience. You don’t have to struggle to find your size. Unlike shopping online, where the sizing may change based on the brand, leaving you with clothes that may not fit to your liking, You also get to skip shipping fees.
Try something new
Trying a new style can be a risk, but it may not be as bad as you think. Stepping out of your comfort zone can help lead you in the right direction in your journey toward finding your style. If it doesn’t work out for you, you can always return to what makes you happy. It is important to remember that this is your personal style, so trust yourself.

I will not today, these dreadful days,
Staring at stone monks, glazed with dew and time,
Kept pristine under faithful gaze,
Awaiting the mourning chime.
Yet I’m here today, in ritual honor,
Fingers tapping to the rhythmic chants.
How cruel it is upon sons and daughters,
Her contours piercing veils as His light decants.
Now we gather, incense set to burn—
One by one—releasing petaled stalks,
Lowering—step by step—I must turn…
To the budding sprouts, to relearn to walk.
For as my paradox of the never-coming future holds strong
I pray for the morrow, which orchids bloom year long.
