If you haven’t heard by now, an incident occurred on October 19, 2025 where a group of thieves robbed the renowned French museum: The Louvre. The heist was successful in which they were able to steal over $100 million dollars worth of jewelry belonging to previous French royalty, including necklaces, earrings, and even a crown(which was dropped not too far from the crime scene). It was a tragic event in the eyes of the French government, but users on the internet, especially TikTok, had other opinions on why this event would go into the history books.
Instead of feeling remorse and despair over the loss of such historical relics, people online began to revere the heist and the ones who pulled it off for their simplistic, but effective methods. The whole thing felt like a fever dream, one minute they arrive on a truck, and the next they’re already making their escape unbeknownst to any of the guards. People were amazed by how quick it took the thieves, only around 7 minutes, and even more intrigued by how this robbery took place in broad daylight while there were visitors in the Louvre. It was a spectacle unlike any other, and because of how fascinating the events of the crime were, the heist sparked a new wave of internet memes.
Users on TikTok began posting videos of them wearing replicas of the stolen Jewelry as if they were the ones who were involved in the Heist. Others commented on photos of the jewelry, asking if anyone wanted to buy it off of them. Not only that, but the Louvre guards were also being mocked online by individuals reenacting what they must’ve been doing instead of their jobs, seeing as they were unaware of the heist as it occurred. No one really condemned the perpetrators, in fact many argued they should be pardoned for their ability to perform the heist so swiftly.
Another hilarious part of this sensation was the involvement of fictional characters. For instance, people began saying that Carmen Sandiego (an iconic thief in novels and shows) was the one who stole the crown jewels, and it was only a matter of time before she was captured by the heroic duo Ladybug and Cat Noir (from the series which sets itself in France). No one was really taking the event too seriously, additionally making headcanons about the names of the thieves and how the crown was dropped. A prominent one being that Person A did the act out of spite in order to blame and boot out the new member of their group who they had a grudge against for seducing their crush. Crazy right? Well that’s what this heist was.
As of the time you are probably reading this, some individuals have already been apprehended for their alleged involvement in the heist (though many believe it to be a cover up). The pieces of jewelry have yet to be retrieved, and the memes are still ongoing as people dressed up as Louvre robbers for Halloween. In all, it will be a while until the internet lets this event go, but as all trends tend to do, the sensation will probably fade within upcoming weeks, so make sure you get to view them yourself before that happens.
