Have you ever wondered how Black Friday started or its history? Black Friday started around 1980 but the term was first used on September 24, 1869 during the crash of the U.S. gold market. The 1869 U.S. gold crash was due to the Jay Gould and James Fisk attempt to corner the gold market. They did this by manipulating the government gold sales policy. Their goal was to drive up the prices of the gold, but as they were in the middle of their plan, Ulysses S. Grant—current president of the time—became doubtful which led him to order the sale of many government gold, which was around $4,000,000, but the Black Friday that we all know today after Thanksgiving was used in the 1950, and it was used by Philadelphia police to describe the traffic and the crowds of people who were out holiday shopping after Thanksgiving, but it was not until the 1980s that the term Black Friday was spread across the United States. The reason that the day after Thanksgiving was called Black Friday was that it was the day where stores would make profit since the black in the name is a reference to making a profit in the business world. The reason that the term Black Friday started was due to the high amount of shoppers who would shop for the winter holiday and how stores would profit off of the high amount of money that is being spent.
