In the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, a baby monkey has recently gone viral for his adorable tendencies and heartbreaking story. Punch is the name of this monkey, a Japanese macaque, who has won the hearts of everyone for always being seen with his signature stuffed orangutan toy and clinging to his favorite zookeepers during feeding time. Like other baby animals, his cuteness knows no bounds, but there is a more serious aspect of his life that makes him stand out as well.
Punch was abandoned by his mother shortly after he was born in July 2025, an outcome that zookeepers believe was caused by the extreme heat and inexperience his mother had with carrying for a child. His mother neglected him, and no other monkeys within the troop adopted him, thus the staff members were forced to intervene and care for him themselves. This was an extremely hard task however, as Punch required constant care and monitoring without a mother. But, there was a silver lining in this hardship as Punch quickly grew attached to an orangutan plush that he views as a surrogate mother in which he finds comfort.
Videos of Punch show him hugging and bringing the toy wherever he goes, and using it when stressful situations arise, like in the initial video of him getting bullied by other monkeys. There are also other fun videos of him rushing and clinging to zookeepers, refusing to let go, and rushing back into their arms when they try to let him down as they leave the enclosure. In all, Punch has become an internet sensation with a backstory people sympathize with and mannerisms that you just can’t help but fall in love with.
His popularity has skyrocketed so much that many companies began making merch of Punch. Additionally the original manufacturers of the orangutan plush, IKEA, has begun to advertise the stuffed toy more often, one advertisement captioning: “Sometimes, family is who we find along the way”, highlighting how while Punch may not have a traditional family in the sense of a biological mother, he has found a sense of place with the zookeepers and his toy. Recently, he has been seen to be making more friends, and is doing well according to the zoo.
As Punch continues to grow despite his unfortunate start, people will continue visiting the zoo as they currently are, keeping everyone updated on how Punch is doing. This form of tourism has revealed that the other monkeys have been warming up to Punch, and he also received his first hug from an adult monkey recently, a significant milestone is his integration with the troop.
In all, his story connects with so many people because it is symbolic of the struggles faced without a motherly figure in our lives, but with the right assistance and support, such struggles can be overcome. Let’s all wish Punch the best!
