Earlier in March, a new account began taking the TikTok popularity charts by storm: “AI Cinema”. This account used AI in order to recreate the classic series Love Island, but with a twist. This time, instead of having a human cast, every islander is a humanoid fruit with unique names respective to said fruits. Examples include “Mangella” based on a mango, or “Coconick” based on a coconut. While there are these distinct changes, the premises of this show closely matches that of the real Love Island. There’s coupling ceremonies, eliminations, challenges, and everything else that draws viewers to Love Island. And coming from someone who has seen both, the AI version creates drama filled content you can watch with just minutes of your time, making it appealing as a quick, but equally fulfilling form of entertainment. There were even viewer participation where watchers could vote for the next “bombshells” who would enter the villa, or which couples should stay together. All of these elements allowed the account and its videos to be extremely popular, gaining over 3 million followers in under 2 weeks, and double to even triple the amount of likes spread throughout their videos.
Since the account was blowing up all over TikTok, it was hard to say you haven’t heard of it due to the number of people posting about how whenever a new episode got uploaded, they dropped whatever they were doing just to watch it. Even verified companies on TikTok joined this trend of watching this show, and commenting about who they thought was going to stay together. But as many celebrities and sensations know, with immense popularity, comes equally as immense scrutiny. After the account took around a 3 day break from posting videos for “vacation”, viewers began growing restless, and it soon became rumored that the creator took the money they earned from these videos to treat themselves to this vacation. While it can be supposed that that is something anyone would do after gaining a lot of money, viewers began to turn on the account, and point out some key flaws and issues with the ethicality of these videos. Only at this point did viewers stop to think, not being swept by the rush of entertainment they were taking, and the cost of these videos.
As many experts and AI critics have been warning recently, the usage of AI is extremely detrimental to the environment because of the amount of water that is consumed, and these videos were no exception seeing as the creator themselves stated that each episode took them over a day to create, having to redo scenes where the AI messed up. Some viewers began urging a massive unfollowing of the account to stop supporting the waste of water for what they now called these once groundbreaking videos, “AI slop”. The people that were once fans now turned into haters, and the quality of succeeding episodes seemed to go down as more and more hate was sent.
In the end, before the creator had the ability to finish the first season of the show, only 21 episodes being available, they announced on their story that they were done with making these videos since they became demonetized. They removed over ⅔ of the episodes from their account, and in a turn of events that people found very hysterical, they began to “crash out” in their posts. This consisted of the creator mocking haters for wanting to save water and the planet and calling out the targeted behavior of these critics to their account vs other AI accounts which they claimed was because “people hate to see people win”. While the production of these videos appears to be halted for now, the account still has a similar amount of followers and likes, showing the impact of this account will last for a long while longer.
