On Saturday, April 25, 2026, a security incident occurred during the White House Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hilton Hotel. At approximately 8:45 p.m., shots were fired outside the venue while President Donald Trump was in attendance. Secret Service agents immediately evacuated the President from the ballroom. He was reported to be unharmed.
The Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service quickly secured the perimeter. Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old male from California. Allen was apprehended at the scene and taken into federal custody. Law enforcement officials recovered a firearm near the hotel entrance.
Following the evacuation, the White House released a statement confirming that all staff and attendees were safe. The dinner, an annual event for journalists and government officials, was canceled for the remainder of the evening. Investigators remained on-site through the night to process the crime scene and determine a motive.
This event has prompted the Department of Homeland Security to review security protocols for high-profile gatherings in the capital. Local officials noted that no other injuries were reported during the apprehension of the suspect. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now leading the ongoing inquiry into the incident and the suspect's background.
