UCL Gameweek One Scores and Game Overviews

The greatest competition in club football has officially started back up, and week one gave us some great games to kick us off! Here’s a rundown of the top three fixtures of the week.

Matchday 1:

Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan (2-1)

The biggest fixture of the week, featuring the Kings of Europe vs. the top Serie A side. Real Madrid went into this home game as favorites, despite a loss to Real Betis a few days prior. The first half ended 2-0 to Real Madrid, despite them only retaining 30% possession and having 6 shots, while Inter had nearly double that with 11 shots. These two goals came from some crucial Inter mistakes and brilliant pressing, with Kylian Mbappe scoring the first off of a terribly placed pass by Yann Bisseck, and Federico Valverde scoring the second through an aggressive press in which he dispossessed the keeper for an easy goal. The story stayed similar in the second half, with Inter retaining 58% possession, but failing to convert all but one of their 10 shots.

Matchday 2:

Liverpool vs. Atletico Madrid (2-1)

A fairly even match, Atleti kicked off the scoring by a goal by Marcos Llorente in the 17th minute, following an assist by Julian Alvarez, who despite being in a bit of a rough patch due to transfer drama, shows no signs of declining on the pitch. However, the Reds were able to start their comeback via a goal by Man of the Match Dominik Szoboszlai in the 40th minute, with the second coming from Mac Allister shortly after the second half started. Liverpool were definitely the better side, although not by much, retaining 45% possession and having 5 shots on target compared to 4, and creating 4 big chances as compared to 1.

Matchday 3:

Bayern Munich vs. Bodo/Glimt (5-0)

Despite Bodo’s underdog story and tendency to slay top teams from last season, the Bundesliga champions were able to make easy work of the Norwegian side. The first half however, was quite frustrating for Bayern, ending 0-0, with Bodo able to successfully keep Bayern quiet and limiting them to only 5 shots on target and 1 big chance. This was false hope though, with Musiala opening the scoring just two minutes after the second half started, after which Bayern didn’t look back for a second. Kane scored another in the 61st, Davies at the 77th, and Olise wrapped it up with two goals in the 83rd and 90+2nd.
